Ok here is my problem I have my tank and I am waiting on a sump from Life Reef. It will not be here till mid August, can I buy live rock now and cure it in a large bucket and have it sit there for over a month?

Watch and see it I get any bad hitch hikers and then when my sump arrives put the rock into the tank.

The reason I ask I found so Fiji rock on sale and would like to get it or should I just wait?

Thanks

Yes you can. Provide decent circulation with a powerhead or two, water changes and if you want to save some of your various macro-algaes and hitchhiking corals provide
some lighting from your lighting fixtures or some inexpensive PC lights though it's amazing how long the spores of algae can survive without light.
Unless this is a super-duper low price on the live rock you can also wait. :)
btw Make sure the bucket isn't metal.

Yes u can put LR in large tubs or even heavy duty garbage can(plastic). They main thing u need it an airstone in the water so any of the life on the rock will survive. i would also feed the LR wih a little fish food to keep the little bristleworms , antropods, copopods etc. alive.

would 90 pounds of live rock be too much in a 58 gallon tank Or would 65 pounds be just fine.
also it depends on how u want the tank to look. I feel can never have enough LR. It depends on the size for your tank. if u find larger piece with alot of holes in them u would u less. DOes that make sense?

If you're away for a long time (more than 4-7 days) you'll need to arrange for somebody to replenish the evaporated water, or the salinity will increase too much.

I had to keep some LR (~50 lb) for 2 months in a 44 gal trash can. I used a CPR Bak pak to provide some level of curculation and skimming.

Once it was in the tank, I was surprised at the number of Christmas tree worms, fan worms, clams, sponges, snails, and crabs that survived. Perhaps my low survival expectations was key to my surprise  .

So, it can be done. It is not much different from the process some people use to curing LR.

Mihai comment about evaporated water is very important to success. I also agree with David Mohr; plan on a partial water change or two.

I have a 58 gallon oceanic with about 60lbs of live rock and IMO it is full - Unless it is really dense 90 lbs would leave little room for anything else.

Regarding the holding of live rock I have done it several times - get a large rubbermaid container from Walmart put a powerhead in and some kind of light and it will be fine.

Keep up with water changes is my best advice.. I do believe Mr. Mohr said pretty much the same thing.
