Hello everyone,

I teach High School biology at Ferndale High School and three years ago wrote and received a grant for about $650 to start up a saltwater tank. I was pretty new back then and thought that was alot of money. I spent that in about 11 seconds and have been paying for everything out of pocket since then. I used to have mostly fish and a shimp or two, but after losing most of them to the power outage this summer I decided to go the reef route. Recently I made a 35 gallon refugium with a mag 9.5 return, an acrylic DIY overflow feeds it pretty effectively. The main tank is 85 gallons. I removed the cc and replaced it with about 180 pounds of southdown and have about 40 pounds of fiji LR in there. I also made a pine DIY stand (tall so my students can see it at eye level as they sit in their seats). I made a canopy and installed 4 55W PC lights I wired up. I put in a DIY PVC beckett type skimmer run by a mag 12 that seems to be working well.
I just received a generous donation of a 250W MH kit and the new canopy is just about done. Water quality is really good and the few fish I have left are fine. Recently I received a really personable yellow tang as a donation that is the new "cool" thing in the tank. I also should be getting some donated chaeto in soon to help the refuge along. So after 3 years working on the tank, my overall impression is that even though I have spent a ton on it, my students love it so much and we use in class as a teaching tool or for examples, that I keep trying to make it better despite the high costs. Some of my older students have started their own at home. I only recently found this site and a few others and people have been very helpful. I wish I would have found them earlier and not made so many costly stupid mistakes.
My goal is to create a reef with a much diversity as possible. Is anyone willing to donate ANYTHING to this worthwile project? I would never ask for freebies for myself, but this really is for my students so I can beg for freebies and still respect myself in the morning. I definetely would pick up locally and would write you a receipt for whatever you feel an item is worth that you can deduct as a charitable donation come tax time (my school is a non-profit organization). I will type it up on letter head and mail it to you or bring it to you on pick up. I have done this before with out any problems for other things like donated computer equipment from local businesses. I would much appreciate ANYTHING anyone would be willing to offer.
The reef now needs:
frags
live rock
light bulbs (250 W MH, 175 MH, 55/65 W PC) -USED BULBS WILL WORK FINE!
test kits
detrivores-we could always use some more sand sifters
live sand
powerheads/pumps-need to make a closed loop
anything laying around not being used anytime soon.

So far we have received some frags and some great lighting upgrades.

Honestly, just about anything could be put to good use and help my school out. Thanks for reading this really long message and considering a donation.

Yeah, get those future reefers started early.

Hopefully you won't have to flunk anyone, or that tank is toast.

If you're willing to pay for overnight shipping, I can send you some Chaetomorpha (plenty of critters in there) the next time I harvest some. An A. efflorescens frag (a very rare piece). Let me know if you want it mounted or unmounted. Plus, I have some extra powerheads too.

Ryan,

One of our clubs big projects is working with the local school systems on reef related projects, including setting up tanks.

Is there a local saltwater club in your area? If so, I'd suggest hooking up with them as more than likely they will be very happy to help you out with everything you need.

I'm still in high school, can I get donated frags too?
Sorry, just kidding.
Ryan72, That is very cool of you to set a tank up in your class. Sorry but I have no frags to offer at this time, I'm still stocking my tanks. Anyway, as my dad got me into this hobby I'm sure you will get a few, at least, interested in the hobby.
Lastly, as reefnutz said, keep an eye on that tank for kids being morons. I'm sure you know that some kids will sadly do anything to piss off a teacher they hate.

The tank is safe. It is in the front of the room facing the students. The only time I am concerned is when I have a sub. I am hardly ever absent and whe I am I usually have another coach sub for me who I trust. I sure some of my students have hated me in the past or some may now, but no one has ever done anything to any of the plants or animals in my room and I am in my 5th year at my school.

no coins yet, but that may be a pretty good way to raise some money :) My kids are pretty good so I don't anticipate anything bad happening. Most of them freak out when I show them a hermit crab, so I don't see any of them reaching in anytime soon.
