Really reef safe? Looks too cool to be true

I checked into them a little bit when designing my first tank. Word on the street is that they're safe to the reef itself but not the critters in or on the reef. To further define it's omnivore label: It's a predator/scavenger species, I think.

I've had one in a nano. They are relatively reef safe (won't touch corals for sure) but will eat any small critters it can capture. They're also very reclusive; mine was rarely seen. That picture looks VERY doctored. I have never seen a Enoplometopus daumi that bright.

Uh NO!...I wont put lobsters in my tank...i dont trust them....they have these lobsters in with the large hermits and moreys...but looks like you have an avatar of one already Juck....hows that working out for ya...

You are right. I saw this article at wet web media and the colors of this lobster are very different (and subdued) comapred to the picture on ebay.

All ebay pics are real. The WWM pics (as well as all the other pic on the web) are doctored with a coloration degradating filter. Just want to make this straight!

I knew a girl with a lobster. Eventually it was the only thing alive in her ~200 gallon tank. I still don't know if she managed to remove it.

Of all the ones I have seen over the years (a hundred or so in the past 6 years working at a pet store) they are very reclusive. I have kept them in with small fish such as small yellow watchman gobies, clown gobies, etc. with no casualties. They do not attack larger snails like spiny and slipper lobsters do. I cannot say for certain if they attack live blue leg hermits or not as they die with such frequency all by themselves. I have also never had one attack a sea anemone.
DO NOT put a red reef lobster into your tank unless you want no snails or hermits, etc. left in the tank. Nasty little buggers.

lol, me too.. only my lfs was in ft meyers fl not anywhere near canada.. and they only had 1, but it looks just like the photo on ebay

My buddies roomate in college bought one of those and put it into his tank as a birthday present. The thing ate 2 tangs and was impossible to get out of the tank. In fact, he did not get rid of the thing until he took the tank down after graduation. I would recommend staying away!

ive seen them too and im 99.9% sure that its not color manipulated/enhanced...they are pretty just dont want to risk it with a lobster...they do eat fish...heck crabs and shrimp(manits) will eat fish..Lobsters are no exception...
