Is this a good place for a tank??

I am helping my cousin with his first reef tank. He is moving into a new house and he wants to put the tank over a gas fireplace that is a room divider with columns on both sides. over the fireplace there is a shelf that is 48*33,this is where the tank is to go. The flue runs through the right column. He said he ran the fire for 30 min and the shelf was still cold. He has add supports under the shelf for the weight of the tank. I still don't think this is a good place for the tank just due to the fireplace. Thought it would look nice. Is the fireplace used? or is it just decorative.

I'd personally worry about the amount of heat it would be generating if its actually used. It could end up sending the temperature in the tank sky high.

One problem I see is where is the sump, skimmer and etc going to go?

It might look nice but doing maintanence would not be fun

yeah, i would do a remote sump if i were to attempt this and i would place some additional GFI outlets in the arch above the tank.... also, i would have the ballasts in a remote location as well.

lastly i would look at doing this somewhere else... i don't think it will be the best viewing in that location... you will be viewing the undersides of corals, won't ya?

I would have to agree with podman on that. You would be looking up at the tank. I didnt realize how tall that fire place was.
