Has anyone set up one of Aerofoamer's new skimmers? Among other changes, there is no longer a collection cup. I'm thinking of buying the new 830 for a 260g tank I'm planning and am looking for any feedback on this new design.

Thanks in advance.

Hmmmm, looks like trouble to me.

i wouldn't want a skimmer thats balanced by a tap, especially one where the overflow is remote, read "wet carpet".

if the skimmer cup was normal, and the skimmer sat in a sump, as i beleave it does, then iff that ever happens its straight back into the sump, np. But if its remote then im sure you can see where all the waters heading.

learned that mistake from having a Titan skimmer, biggest pice of crap id ever used, cant beleave the guy who designed it had even seen what a reef looks like, let alone tried to keep one.

You know, I had never thought of that. In fact, when I plan my dream reef tank in my head (which is on a daily basis) and think about where I would place my protein skimmer, I always end up placing it outside of the sump. It's always been an AquaC 400 EV-400 with an Iwaki 55 RLT plumbed outside of the sump. Your right, you never know when something might go wrong and you could end up with most of the water from your sump on the floor because you kept your protein skimmer outside of it. Hmmm!

Howdy,

Are the Aerofoamer series really worth the money? I ask because I have never used one, and they seem a little "flimsy". The whole thing is made of thin looking acylic and looks to be of poor fit and finish. Is this the case? For the kind of money they are asking for these skimmers, I would expect the use of better quality materials than 1/4" acrylic and white PVC parts I could buy at Home Depot.

The cheapest one is $500 and doesn't even come with a pump. NOW they don't come with a collection cup either, but you can buy a waste container seperately for another $100. Heck, I can get a Euroreef CS12-1 or CS8-3 for the same money and I know from experience that they are built of very high quality materials, not Home Depot PVC. AquaC is another company that builds top notch skimmers with VERY high quality materials, and you can get an EV-240 with collection cup and Iwaki MD40 for less.

I have to know what is the attraction to these skimmers. They look cheap, but cost an arm and leg. Maybe they are that great, and maybe I'm just being a "skimmer snob", but I hate it when companies use cheap parts (like white PVC from HD) and charge an arm and leg for it.

Peace,

Scott.

There was a skimmer comparison on the web (can't seem to find the link anymore) that ranked the Aerofoamer just ahead of Euroreef and AquaC in terms of performance. I don't recall what they said about build quality though.

Anyone have bad experiences with Aerofoamer's construction quality?

I think that their build quality is very good, however, I've never seen one in person, but in all the pictures, they look real purdy.

Also, a test was done comparing an aerofoamer, euroreef, and aqua-C skimmer and the aerofoamer came out on top, so one could say that the aerofoamers could possibly be one of the best skimmers in the world. It is a beckett skimmer and I'd say that beckett skimmers from any of the reputable makers probably perform the best (when properly run with a dedicated pressure rated pump) when compared to euroreefs and the aqua-C skimmers. Although, the other two aren't shabby either :).

I think when you are talking about these skimmers, there are just small differences in skimming ability. All will perform well and do a good job of skimming your tank. As to the price, if you want the "best", then you'll have to pay for it.

Peace,
John H.

You should check out some the top European skimmer brands if you want to see some high quality but super expensive skimmers. Brands like Deltec, Grotech, H&S, Schurams and others cost several thousand dollars each!

I have an old design of the Aerofoamer, its built with top quality products all the around. I have 3 of their largest units and have used them for over 4 years now, insane skimmers I tell yah. My ONLY problem is with the Beckett injector. I get a ton of limpits breeding in my systems and they always find their way into the injector and cut the flow. To counter this, I have extra injectors and simply take one off and soak it in Muratic acid for a few minutes. Disolves the little buggers right outa the injector.
