My otherwise seemingly healthy Lionfish died suddenly this afternoon. He went from swimming happily about, to hiding in the rocks and dying in a matter of minutes. He had been eating well and showed no signs of stress. All other tank inhabitants, including a Derasa Clam and Soft Corals, are fine. Any theories?

Did you do any water changes or have any of your critters disappeared, Ive seen a lionfish choke to death on a clown before.

I've heard the main cuase of death for lionfish in captivity is live large skulled fish which may become lodged in their intestines causing blockage and death. That's why I train them to eat frozen mysis and other such frozen foods, or feed them live ghost shrimp until then.

If you can get gulf shrimp (I dont know what the real name for them is, they just come from the Gulf of Mexico / Lake Pontchartrain) you can cut them into 3 to 5 pieces and my lion never had a problem eating that and my triggers loved it.

Feeding guppies is not the best for a constant diet. Guppies are fresh water and do not have all of the Omega-3s and other components that SW fish have. Your Lion might have slowly starved to death.

Did the LFS know the fish was sick?

Guppies don' t really have all the nutrition that the lion/other fish require. And for those that feed krill or freeze dried food be sure to soak it real good. Like stated above this will cause a blockage and kill the fish if not hydrated.
