Reef Species dateebase

Hi all.

I've started a new site devoted to showcasing the different species of reef fish and corals. I would also like to promote the sale of frags to take some pressure off our reefs

Please post pics here that you don't mind me using. I will add most of them to the database for all to enjoy Post a pic of anything your willing to share. Fish, softies, SPS, inverts, what ever you want!

sounds fun. couple q's:

1. what's the URL?
2. how are you handling attribution for photos?
3. do you have a policy on the site about photo contributions and usage?

IMO, if you have a site for this purpose you shouldn't ask folks to post pictures here for you to then grab -- you should have people either submit to your site directly or send them to you in e-mail with permission, and you should have a clear policy on the site covering appropriate usage of photos with a statement that copyrights remain with the owners.

fishbase.org is an excellent example of a global species database that solicits outside photo contributions -- they have a great model that ensures appropriate usage of photos and copyright protection.

people are justifiably very hesitant to contribute their photos to random sites -- it's all too common to see your work appearing in other contexts without permission.

Thanks for the heads up!

The species index is being made with noobs in mind. I would like to create a visually appealing database. I want it to be easy to navigate through using pictures to help people find the information they need

I hope a few noobs can find the index before they purshase anything from their lfs. If the index saves a few tangs from a 30g then it will be worthwhile.

It's only a free forum for now. I'll buy it if it gets enough interest. It's still being created but feel free to post in there.
