alright i'm leaving town for about a month for boot camp. during this time my roomate and i are moving into a different apartment. i have a 55g tank with a skunk clown, 6-line wrasse, firefish, cleaner shrimp, pep shrimp, and about 3 hermits. to make his life easier i was think of cycling a 20 long i have laying around and have those fish in there for the month i'm gone. i would of course have what live rock i don't use in the 55 partly full with some powerheads. my roomate has been with me and helped me set up the tank so i'm not worried about that. i'm worried if the roughly 30 days the fish are in the 20 long, will they be alright.

I say go for it. They should be perfectly fine. Doesn't seem like you have much of a bioload.

i was think of cycling a 20 long

Of course you will probably have a cycle of some kind if even a small one but make sure to use as much water from your 55 that you can so that way you will have little to no cycle and you will already know your water parameters are on point. Just remember, the smaller the tank the greater and quicker your water parameters can get out of whack.

I would highly suggest the following:

1) Perform more frequent testing then you normally would to help mantain stability.

2) Perform water changes religiously to ensure levels are kept in check and for better nutrient export.

3) Reduce feedings!

A MONTH???

Last I knew it was 13 weeks????

boy did I enlist at the wrong time (maybe if I had waited or stayed in I could be one of "The Few, The Proud, The Demonized") I would rather be in that freaking desert than here listening to the crap roll around about the Marines and Soldiers in Iraq and how terrible they are (I promise I would shoot any moving thing not in American Desert Cammos)
