Since I have been battling Hair algae and high phosphates I put in a piece of LR covered in Macro algae 2 weeks ago into the main tank.

The hair algae is still growing but the macro algae is almost all dead. I have no creatures that will eat it. The macro has turned white and clear.

Any basic ideas?

Common with Cauperla sp. Often referred to as the algae "going sexual," however, I have yet to see any reproduction after this event. In my experience, it usually happens when the algae has grown a significant amount. Next time, try thinning the algae out a bit now and then, that has helped me with this.

It depends. The going sexual is still not well understood, BTW.

The algae is Caulerpa taxafolia. I guess I am out another $40.

Is there ever an end to an ailing tank?

Or is it time to tear it down and get all new stuff and start over?
