Over the last month or so, I have heard frogfish, anthias, dottybacks, and maybe others all referred to as boring. What fish aren't boring?

Well, I can't imagine dottybacks being called boring. :? Who said that? Let's slap him. :P
Aside from that, I find any fish without a modicum if intelligence or presence boring, regardless of it's chromatic qualities.

Having said that, here are fish that are NOT boring according to Jim:

Groupers (among the coolest fish, intelligent and very unboring!)
Angel Fish (even the smaller ones, C. argi is one of the coolest)
Trigger Fish (nuff said)
Wrasses (too many cool ones to name)
Lion Fish
Hawk fishes
Basslets, royal grammas, brazilian grammas, etc
Surgeons and tangs (perhaps an exception to the rule I stated above. dumb fish, but cool nevertheless)
Damsels (underrated, and poorly represented. There are many reef appropriate species if you know what you're doing)
Clown Fish ( I have a pair of maroons, what a cool thing to watch!)

Anthias are like tetras or goldfish, no presence at all. They still suck.

Yeah, but dottybacks are boring, and I've already kept several species.

Ooooooh....Ok. This is serious. Where is that boy? What do we do with him? Hot sauce?

I think Jim hit it right on the head. I agree with his selection of non-boring fish. I'll add puffers and blennies to the list. Puffers can become like pet dogs, and blennies are similar to hawkfish in that they seem to be watching you. Very cool.

Man, did I say that!?!

I'll slap myself right now. I think what I meant was that they're all fairly common, and boring in that respect. Sort of like when you see a picture of a tank with a yellow tang, two clownfish, and a damsel....snore. They certainly don't have boring personalities.

I think some eels are a bit boring, unless they're eating. My zebra moray does nothing but breathe all day, and I think he's blind. Tangs don't do much for me either. They remind me of cows of the sea.

I think some gobies are really fascinating to watch, especially any shrimp partner. Having a neon goby swim up to your hand and clean it is kind of cool too. I have to agree wholeheartedly with the angels, triggers, and puffers.

I second that.

I have a lot of tangs because they're utilitarian fish, but they don't do much for me either. Belligerent, boring and stupid! :)

I think blennies and squirrelfish all suck.

However, the Hawaiian sailfin blenny we got in the shop this week was awesome...huge, and FAT. The rest of them suck, IMO...

Peace,

Chip

I think lawnmowers are anything but boring. In any case, boring is in the eye of the beholder.

Yeah, blennies don't suck! They are gruff but lovable.

IME the humble ocel. clown is hard to beat for personality. They even got their own feature film.

If they don't dig hole on sand/rock, they are not boring fish...

How about anglers?

Most of the rocks in my tanks are about as interesting as the anglers I've kept. Sure, it's neat to watch them feed - for a while. Then the novelty wears off and you're left with a fish that not only just sits there and doesn't do a darn thing, it doesn't look like a fish. It looks like a rock.
I did have to bleed the air out of one years ago with a needle, that was interesting. :D

OK, here are my most interesting fish, so far.

Comet, or marine betta
Fuzzy dwarf (shortfin) lionfish

Both are so cool when they are hunting. Guess I like predators...

Dude! Bennies do not suck!

My bi color blenny rocks the tank! He is full of awesome personality.

He will back into my maxi jets when they turn off, tempting fate that the wavemaker will kick on and shoot him out. I only saw that once, but it was hilarious.
