I am comtiplating replaceing my MR-1 with a Euroreef skimmer.

Reasons are I have to constantly adjust the MR-1 and it doesn't pull out allot of skimmate.

Has anyone hooked up an external collection container to a Euroreef? I would like to do this since we go away allot on the weekends and wont be home to dump the cup every day.

What happens when the normal collection cup gets filled?

I drilled a hole in the side of all my ER collection cups and put in a 1/2 inch NPT fitting, glued it in place with 5 min epoxy, and added tubing to a big ol collection container.

When the collection cup gets full without an external collection container it overflows back into the sump.

Anybody use the ASM version? They are about a $100 cheaper.

I've never understood external collection cups. Why not just clean it out often enough that you don't have to worry about it?

Some of the external ones automatically shut off the air supply to the skimmer when they get full. In the case of a Euroreef, this will overflow the skimmer, because of the unique design of the pump and venturi intake.

The one thing I don't like about the ER is the union that attaches the collection cup. Its a pain to remove, so just popping off the cover and scooping the riser tube clean with an index finger does the trick for me. Besides that, I a big lazy!

Thats what I do. If the skimmer air shuts off, the skimmer just overflows back into the sump.

Anemone - The Euroreef ES5-3 is $268.00. Where is the equivalent ASM product cheaper?

Peej - My skimmer is a piece of #2.

Do you really need to empty your collection cup every day? I only empty mine weekly, somtimes less if I am lazy. I like to run a fairly dry skimate though. That is just my preference.

I run mine dry and I feed sparingly so I'm only cleaning mine like once a month..

I dont know what the Euroreef will do yet. The MyReef I have now doesn't pull out much of anything.

I clean mine maybe once a week or week and a half. It's an undersized skimmer too, rated for a 75 gallon on a 125 tank.

And Righty, if you'd ever put a ER in a stand with 1" clearance above the CC, you would love that union. :D

I have a heavily stocked 75G and I feed very well 1x a day and I dump my cup 1 or 2 times a week and it is usually 1/2 to 3/4 full, I have to tilt it a little to get it out from under the stand and I do not want to spill any, oh and I run the pipe all the way up for wet skimmate and it is still black

I have exactly that! The union is fine, but still hard to deal with which is why I go with the extra collector.

I have an ASM skimmer on my large tank and three Euroreefs on other tanks. I like the ASM very much and wouldn't hesitate in buying another. I like the way the collection cup connects to the skimmer better on the ASM.

I used to use a euro-reef CS8-3 but changed it in for a bullet 3 which IMO is a much better skimmer. I use a collection cup on that which shuts off the air when its full so wont overflow.

I also like the fact that I can run the skimmer internal or externally, the Euro-reef has to be in sump only. The euro-reef had a longer contact time but the much larger riser tube on the bullet allows for a very thick foam. IMO the PM bullet skimmers are the best you can get. Very similar to what you already have.

My MR-1 doesn't pull ,uch out at all. I have to adjust the gate valve every day and sometimes every few hours just to get water in the collection cup. In my case the skimmer is in the sump so the Euroreef should work fine.

I ordered the Euroreef and I will see what happens. (Praying that I bought something good)

Hey Rob Reef Keeper,

What are you using to run the MR-1? Just curious because I know that your results will vary greatly depending on the pump you are using. Pressure rated pumps will give you drastically different results on a beckett skimmer. If you don't use a pressure rated pump, then you usually won't see good results, unless you have a non-pressure rated pump that is pumping way in excess of 1000 GPH, but that just wastes electricity and is bad for the pump.

If you don't have either, then don't expect too much out of it.

Peace,
John H.

Geo makes an awesome needlewheel skimmer that is much cheaper then an euroreef and made much better then an ASM.
I replaced my beckett with one.
Unless you have a large pump on a beckett it can't compare to a needlewheel

I recieved my first Euroreef but thanks to UPS it is smashed into pieces. I thought the post office was bad.

I should be getting the replacement any day now.

My luck never changes............
