I moved my 37g reef to a new tank over the last two weeks. Current inhabitants that came from the old tank are a green chromis, a pair of false percs, and a royal gramma basset. The new tank is a 55g display with 10g homemade ATS and 25g refugium with sandbed. I'm hoping to add a blue tang, a yellow tang, a bangai cardinal, some cleaner shrimp, and some peppermint shrimp. Though the tangs would be small, I still can't help but feel that I'd be overstocking.

PS: everything in the new tank looks happy, especially with the new Wave2k on.

I'd nix the tangs and add a couple smaller fish, like a carpenter's wrasse or something.

Peace,

I wouldn't really put a tang in anything less than a 75. Even then...scopas and kole would be the best bets.

I had a chevron in a 110, and he did very very well.

If you had a 125, I'd say go for it.

I agree. The tank is much too small for two tangs. A single kole tang would be fine for quite a long time IMO, but it's still not the best thing for it. You have many options for much more appropriate fish.

Howdy,

I would also have to second the idea of not putting tangs into a tank that small. They would be fine for while, assuming you purchased smaller specimens, but eventually would outgrow a 55g tank. The biggest mistake is to buy fish based on their juvenile size. Most tangs can grow to be at least 9" long, which is just too large for a tank under 100g.

The rest of the animals you want to put in should be fine in that tank. Make sure there are plenty of perches and hiding places. I had a royal gramma in a 55g with several other fish, and he tended to pick on slower fish, like bangai cardinals. I finally reworked the live rock and put more hiding places in, and that seemed to ease the tension.

Good luck,

Scott.
