I don't know if Haunama (sp?) bay in hawaii counts.
I picked yes anyway, because there were corals. But it was nothing like the reef pictures I have seen or the reef on nature shows. Still fun snorkeling. Saw lots of pairs of butterfly, and sailfin tangs so big it makes me feel guilty to have one in a tank.
Yes I Have,I lived in Hawaii for 12 years and I had a reef 5 miles from my house and I used to collect all my own species. I have been to reefs in the in the Coral Sea.
I've snorkeled on many caribean reefs but after seeing pics of Pacific reefs I think I'm definitely missing out on the good stuff (though I saw a brain coral once that was about 10 feet high and 5 across).
I decided to set up my first reef after a cruise to the Bahamas. It was only snorkeling, not very good snorkeling really, but that was when I made up my mind that it was something I had always wanted and now was the time. It took a year and a half to get the tank started, but I'm definitely glad I did.

How do you know? No offence, as I loved the keys when I dove there last year also. I dive the BVI a few times a year, and although it's been getting worse each year some far out sites are great. Now I just need to get to the pacific. I am getting my housing for my rebel soon so will come back in jan. with some nice pics for you guys.
I have been snorkling in the BVI since i was a kid. About 6 years ago I found a very shallow hidden area (used to be a turtle nursery) with a small Elkhorn growing there. I have snorkled/dove the whole reef off white bay, JVD many times and this is the only elkhorn left on this reef. Last may I eagerly went to go see "my" elkhorn and found it had just recently been hit by a dingy prop. The little it had grown in all these years and it was smashed into lots of chunks. It was a sad sight and reminds me of the human impact on all our reefs. In any case I positioned some of the chunks on the rocks around the elkhorns base and can't wait to go back ina few weeks to check on it. If its a goner I would be very upset.
Yeah, but no big Potato Cods were there! The boat that took us to Cod Hole and other dive areas (too bad my wife and I only snorkel, but we still saw a lot), the run up to Cook's Look, the Clam Garden and taking a dinghy to another little island close to the main island were the highlights of our honeymoon trip there in 1998. Lizard Island is simply amazing. After spending a few days at Lizard Island and coming back to Cairns, we felt we had just left paradise.
To eGSix,a good place to get coals is off the Kona coast up around the Four Seasons resort,About 4 miles south of it,the first logoon you come to. I used to get a lot of neet stuff there. PS( hope this helps and good hunting)
The best Reef to dive in is the Great Barrier off the coast of Cairns. If any of you out there ever get the chance to go to Australia ,dive the Great Barrier, there is nothing else like it in the world
