The hex tank is smelling like a sewer this morning very strange indeed? The only thing differant i have performed on the tank was a stripdown of the external filter yesterday. Which is only used for mechanical and chemical filtration only. It is stripped regular and cleaned to stop it going biological! I removed all the carbon yesterday to run a week or so without for a change. This would explain the sudden smell maybe? But why? what is causing this stench. Ammonia nitrite and nitrate are undetectable ph is 8.4 sg 1.025 temp 79. All fish occupants are intact and accounted for. Could a snail have died and caused this? And if this is the case why has it not affected my parameters? There has been a slight increase in skimmate which would also point towards a dead animal/invert?

Any idea's.........

Does it smell like rotten egg yolk, or it smell like a dead fish?

I know from personal experience that when snails die they reek like a cesspool. 8O

I'd double check that fileter and do a water change just in case.

If it stinks, then something is amiss. If there's a dead snail in there, the clean up crew and bristleworms will make short work of the carcass, in fact, they can pretty much eat a small fish down to the bone within the hour.

Check around the tnak for anything that could have bailed out. If the smell is coming from the water, then do the water change as suggested.

He he, any chance you were thawing out a cup of frozen fish food and forgot about it? I have done that a few times, the smell after 36 hours is unreal.
