Southeastern Marine Aquarium Society...

we have been tossing around the idea of starting up a southeastern u.s. club with subchapters in different locals.our website is located here http://atlanta-smas.org please notify with a new post if you are interested in starting a subchapter...a yearly meeting, and frag event, would be one goal to shoot for.our club has grown extremely fast in two short months...we want to keep the meetings as intimate as possible by branching out into smaller subchapters. our club organizers have always strived to have the direction of the club steered by its members. the subchapters can link up to the smas website as (frags), :D any other states or local chapters that wish to start a frag club are welcomed...entirely non profit. fun and education are the only goals.

INteresting concept, but I think the average hobbies would be better served by a local club. The SE Louisiana reef club has grown to 160 member in just over 2 years. The members are really helpful to each other. I think that would get lost on a more regional club. A regional meeting of the local clubs would be interesting.

local clubs is what we are hoping to initiate...{many local clubs}.we have seen our membership grow at an alarming rate. when membership reaches a certain volume it is difficult to organize meetings at local fish stores and hold group outings...we are hoping to find interested reefers who want a club in their locality...we will hold meetings in our prospective communities throughout the year. ultimately getting together annually for a large regional meeting...more reef clubs combined to share more info, and have more fun

we now have two subchapters or frags that are meeting regularly...its amazing how far a reefer will drive to communicate with others of like mind (other alien species)

Our club is working on the same concept, A larger organization wirth sub groups. I think it is a good idea, but not everyone agrees. We did get some bad responses at first, but not everyone understands the concept.

How would this vary from MASNA?

http://www.masna.org/aboutus.php

I am not sure exactly, because I am not aware of all the details of MASNA. The concept we are working on is that when you join, your club is then considered non-profit charitable without having to file separately. The club would be an affiliated part of the parent organization, and would have to follow all of the same federal guidelines. A consilidated tax return would be filed. Each club would be like a department, so to speak.

I did not think MASNA appeared to be the same.

What's the point in that. Anyone can setup a non-profit. I agree with wazzel people are just better off having local in state clubs. I wouldn't drive 10 hrs just for a frag and some punch, JMO.

i believe you are missing the point. our intentions are to keep the club in smaller subchapters. we have been having meetings that are filling up peoples homes...it becomes difficult to find space, and willing hosts, after a certain point...i like a smaller meeting 20 - 30 max. when you exceed that number it becomes too much like work. its working so far, so i guess time will tell.
