Time to buy!!!!!

For the longest time, I have been running NO tubes and keeping mainly a few shrooms, and one poor leather that was rescued and is maintaining fairly well, although not really growing much. Well, I have saved and saved and it's time to give my 120 gallon 60"w X 24"d X 30"h tank and it's residents the light they deserve and me the ability to start making a reef tank.

I would like to add just about anything coral-wise, but realize my limitations as a relative newbie and so don't feel terribly predisposed to running out and getting the most difficult SPS I can find or, for that matter, clams. Mostly, I would like the ability to select a variety of run of the mill corals, nothing dramatic until I can keep them and grow them succesfully.

So, with that row out of the way, I'm looking at dual MH 250 watts probably, as I don't want a huge bill increase on power, with or without VHO actinic supplementation. Electronic ballasts are a must as they seem to pull lower amps on startup, something I don't want to start doing is rewiring my fish room, add to that they run cooler. ALso, I may be building a proper hood, but pendants are not ruled out, nor complete hood systems. So the game is fairly open.

Budget? Let's say ~ 600 - 800

Reefs.org, what do you recommend?

There are a couple of things to consider here, as I'm sure you know. First of all, I would personally consider dual 400w for a 120g tank. I don't think that 500w would give you the lighting you would like.

I personally like pendants too. I think that Aqua Medic has a big cool looking pendant that would probably fit your needs, maybe someone knows what it is. I have the smaller Aqua Medic 250w pendant and it is great.

For the price mentioned above you may consider a pendant without actinic augmentation and just run 20k DE MH bulbs, maybe even a 20kAB bulbs.

As for energy consuption, unless you are on a VERY shoestring budget you won't feel the MH cost much.. just a few bucks if you run them 8-10 hrs like most ppl.

BTW... if you do get interested in the pendant I know of a great little shop in Ga. that I'm sure would love your business. They even matched the lowest price I could find on my pendant!

WELL GOOD LUCK!
LEt us know what you decide.

I would do 250's with vho actinic. The 250 would give you what you need for just about anything. If you were going to be using the 20k I would consider the 400w, but only for the 20K bulbs. My preference is 10k with actinic.

go with 250w DE bulbs. You get the benefits of a 400w using 250. And depending on the color temp of the bulb, you might want to add actinics later.

By the calculations you gave your tank is about 185 gallons- and with a 30inch depth, I would probably go with the 250 watt pendants, HQI double ended, as mentioned. The reflector(reef optix III or PFO are the best reflectors, per Sanjay) will give a little more penetration. Otherwise, I would go with 400 SE bulbs.

I am doing a 3' 70 gallon, and am using 2 PFO mini pendants with DE 250watt bulbs, with icecap electronic ballasts. This set-up will run you about $300-350 per pendant, depending on the bulb you get, and if you make a ballast enclosure for them.

I share Wazzel's afinity for 10K bulbs with actinics, so I am adding VHO's on an icecap 660. That will run you another $250.

Best, Peter

I have been reading all day (actually fell asleep at my comp for about 15 minutes surfing for equipment, reading reviews and checking posts).

I'm just about down to

Reef Optix III pendant
AB 10k DE or Hamilton 14k DE
Icecap ballasts

Is this in the right direction?

With actinics, I'd go with the Ushio 10K. Without actinics, you'll want Aqua Connect 14K (if you can find them). Considering the depth of your tank.

I run three tanks one is all VHO, one is MH with VHO supplement, the other is NO. Depends on what you like. I like the look of VHO but getting enough wattage on a tank versus MH requires some work and more expensive for the tubes. My vote would be MH - I like the look of 10K bulbs the family likes 20K bulbs and the corals seem to like the 20K bulbs. Given the size of your tank I would highly recommend 2 - 400watt MH especially if you go 20k.

Okay, went to Sanjay's site last night, and went blind looking at all the different charts.

I was telling my wife all this, showing her what I was looking at, when she said, "ooooh, get that one, it would look great over the tank!"

It's an 2x250 Aquastarlight w/moonlight

Can't find a controller for it though, but my wife has given her blessing on it.

I'd consider 2x250 HQI 10k's and if it dosen't seem to be enough add a 250 20k in the center. I have a 90g with 2 250 10K SE's. If i had a the extra length of a 120 i'd do 3 250's with one of them being a 20K. I've read some people ahve had good efect withthat combo.

Regards,
JoeW

Loggerhead,

Check out XM. They are testing as good as many of the brands mentioned and are considerably lower on price. This is why I went with them. I definately dont regret my decision. I just switched to running to 20K 175 moguls over my 60 and I love them. I dont have any flourescent supplementation and I still like the looks.
