Anyone have a recommendation? I was told the Remora Pro was a good unit, but I have little experience with hang-on skimmers. Any advice appreciated. This tank will house a trigger or two, and a few groupers so the waste load will be high.

The one I just installed is a Turboflotor. From the research I did it seemed to be the most highly recommended hang-on (which I needed because there is no room in the sump). It was pretty easy to install and seems to need no adjustments at all which is a welcome relief.

There was one quality issue - out of the box one of the joints leaked. It was easily fixed with some silicone.

I second the turboflotor multi 1000 which I have used on many reefs for years. It has outproformed both a remora pro and other brands I have tried. I have had mine for years and no issue with quality. I did break one of the outflow pipes but used that blue pipe glue to fix it and still use it.

A 120 on the other hand is a bit big for a hang on, so you may consider a custom from some one like lifereef to fit yout needs.

Hmmm...thanks. I just looked at the Lifereef site, and their hang-on skimmers tower over the tank. I can't have that on a display tank in the living room. I'll look into the turboflotor.
Any other opinions?

I prefer the Red sea berlins with an upgraded venturi, I'm using a kent venturi on mine now.

I recently...about 3 months ago...set up a 120. I have an Aqua-C...I think it's great. The people at Aqua-C are very helpful too.

I have the AquaC Remora Pro with the Mag3 pump upgrade and the preskimmer box. The preskimmer box is a bit awkward, and the Mag3 pump is large. But the whole thing seems to skim quite well and quietly.

My aqua-c pro hang-on skimmer and I are in love. It's quiet, effiecient, and beautiful. I just got the overflow box and I can't wait to install it. I use the skimmer for a 55 gallon reef, though, so I don't know how it would perform on a heavy loaded FO tank.

IMO all the skimmers mentioned are a bit undersized for a 120.

Being forced to chose between the Turboflotor and the Remora Pro. I'd personally go with the Aqua-C for sure. If you go with the Remora, make sure to get the preskimmer/overflow box and of course, the MAG 3 pump.

For a 120 gallon tank, when it comes to the Aqua C, I don't think were talking about their hang-on-the-tank line.....the one I got can be mounted in the sump or, if cosmetics allow for it, as they do in my case, beside the tank. The hang-on-the-tank of any brand, whether it be Aqua-C or anyone else's, are just generally too small for a 120 IMO.

I agree with Avi and Save_the_Expos, we're not looking at the right class of skimmers here.

On my 120 I run an AquaC EV-180 w/ Mag 7 and get pretty good performance out of it; you'll also get comparable performance out of a Percision Marine Bullet-1, with the Bullet likely doing a better job. After working with Turbofloaters and Berlin's at the shop for a good long while, I can say that their performance is no where near that of an appropriately sized AquaC or Precision Marine, and Aqua-Medic's rating for this skimmer makes me nautious! Same deal w/ the Berlin. It just reinforces my opinion that if the skimmmer's mass produced, it's crap. [/quote]

Thanks for the input everyone.
It looks like I may have to mount two of whatever skimmer I choose.
Noise level will be an issue too given the placement of this tank.

An comments on the Remora Pro vs Urchin skimmers? How about noise level?

When I had my remora pro I didnt like it much at all. I used it on a 40 gal and got much better proformance from the turboflotor HOT. I was using a aqua bee on the turnboflotor and not the mag three on the remora. This may have been the problem.

I didn't like the EV-240 I had either though and a good pump for that, all well. Of course if you had the option to do a external/sump skimmer everyone would go to the obvious, becket and other larger skimmers.

The turboflotor and remora pro were both qiute by my standards and the TF comes with a silencer that would easily adapt to and venturi skimmer.

The Remora and Urchin skimmers are the same exact skimmer, but with different external hardware for hanging on the tank (Remora) or sitting in the sump w/out falling over (Urchin). The noise isn't bad, but i suppose everyone has a different treshold for skimmer noise.

I'd just mention that I don't know what kind of noise those make...or don't make...but the Aqua-C that I have is pretty close to silent....Has a very, and I mean very, slight sound. If you're five feet from it, you don't hear it. That's one of the many reasons I like it....The lovely wife watches TV in this room and I wouldn't want my brain coral to interfere with the Last Comedian Standing.
