Ok... new to SW and read that I needed a skimmer. LFS and online store both recommended this skimmer.

Now that I have it set up, I have found it to be quite the little noise maker and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to lessen or muffle the noise.

Please dont say take it back and get a different one. Just looking for a way to muffle this one.

Thanks.

Hi matt and :welcome:

I've never used a prizm so I can't offer much but I can move your post into the main discussion forum where it will probably get a lot more looks.

Take it back and get a different one.

(sorry, couldn't resist)

I've got a prism up in my attic gathering dust. I noticed the same thing you did--it's just way too loud. I could never find a way to quiet it down, and I also noticed that it needed constant adjustment--like on the order of every day.

Hope somebody can help more than me, but at least you know you're not alone, eh?

Hopefully you can find a way to quiten the thing down.... I'm new to SW too.. and looked at the Prism skimmer... mostly because of the price... it can be had at bigalsonline for $58! I read lots of reviews.. and MANY of them stated that it was noisy. IF YOU DO want to get rid of it.. they seem to be selling pretty readily on eBay.

For me.. I forked out a few extra and went with the AquaC Remora HOT skimmer with a 1200size pump... but thats just me.

Good luck with it.. let us know if you figure the thing out!

I have the Pro version, its much bigger and has a magnet style pump...rated for 300G tank, virtually silent, skims very dry foam, and rarely needs adjusting....of course it costs on the order of 3x to 4x the price of the standard prizm.

I used one for a year on a 29 gallon tank. It was noisy but worked. I found that that f you adjusted it..to minimum "noise" it still performed well enough for that size tank. Ok.....However .....after two years of this hobby I am flip floppin........these skimmers are just high end "air stones". There is nothing wrong with that. You want lots of oxygen in your water. Just my drunken opinion.

perhaps if you have a sump you could put it down below. (if it isn't already down there) Had one of them too. It cracked which was good enough reason to get something way better! Good luck.

You can put a Maxi-Jet silencer in the air intake. It will chage the pitch or "note" of the sound (not so much the volume, but will come down a bit) (I use this skimmer for the QT) Get the 1200 MJ great litte gadget.

Thanks for the info. I may just e bay it and go for the remora. It wasn't really a price thing for me. It was actually recommended to me and thats why I got it. Guess it does come down to you get what you pay for.

I've got one of these also...originally was really loud too.
Pull the intake apart and count the vanes on the impeller...if it's 12, contact RedSea with your problem and see if they'll replace it. They've now gone to 18 blade impellers which are way quieter. Mine's been running quieter, but still not silent. I'm gonna try that muffler idea....main noise is the air intake.

I am running a Prizm in my 10g. I noticed that if you add water to the first compartment (the seperate one that contains the water intake tube) it reduces the noise by about half.

Now I just haveta watch the temp. and see if I have to add fans (the joys of living in the desert)

I've really liked my remora so far.... went with the MJ1200 pump..(think I've already said that). Plus with the Remora I wouldn't be afraid to run it on a 50-75 gallon tank when I upsize... so don't have to buy another skimmer.

The way I've been lookin at it is... just buy the good stuff first off... even if it take a little longer to get everything... will probably pay off in the long run.

check it out guys, a seaclone 150 is 80 bucks on fosters and smith and I know you can get it elsewhere cheaper. I got mine for 50 beans from my LFS and it totally rocks out with a maxijet 1200. (which comes with it btw,)

Ummm....are you being serious or is this post supposed to be tongue in cheek?

Only reason I ask is that I've rarely heard anything positive about SeaClones...well, I don't hear much good about Prizms either, but I've got such a low bioload on my 25 it does the job fine. If I were to recommend a skimmer for someone and they didn't have a small, low load tank, I'd definitely go with something else....

I have the Seaclone 150 but I won't get another. Its on my 100 gallon. There are times when I have had to dump and clean the cup out within a few days and other times a month or more will go by before I have to clean it.

Ok.....here is some real help.......just turn the valve to the point that it is almost off. Your prizm skimmer will still work and be pretty quite. I used one for a year on a 29 with no problems.......till I overstocked my tank. Never again.
