I am currently in the process of engineering the plumbing for my tank. I have checked out the pump selection section but would appreciate some help in selecting a return pump based on your experiences and my particular set up. Here are the specifics:

The tank is an AGA 65 gallon reef ready with a 1" drain and 3/4" return. Based on my calculations water will need to flow about 10' vertically and about 28' horizontally (from sump to tank). I plan on having two ball valves on the return line (one at the tank and one after the pump). I will also be placing a check valve in line. I plan on using flexible PVC. From what I have seen most pumps have a 1" outlet, I plan on running whatever diameter the pump outlet is all the way to the tank return and then reducing the pipe diameter back to 3/4" at the tank. From what I have read my overflow can move about 600 GPH, so I need a pump that will give me around 600 GPH based on my set up. I know I will also need to add a closed loop system to obtain the water turnover that I need. I would really like a pump that is energy efficient, preferrably magnetic (based on what I have read) and reliable.

Sorry for the long winded post. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

i recommend iwaki, it is what i use. they are very reliable and the 30rlt or 30rlxt might be perfect for you. if it is too much you can always use a valve to reduce the flow.

Liquid,

Yes, thanks. I have viewed the site that you posted. I was kind of wanting to hear from other reefers personal experiences with their pumps.

The Iwaki 30 will not give the flow you are looking for, esp if you are going to have a check valve. I would use atleast an iwaki 40 rlt or the 55. The 55 would give you in the range of 800 gph. I'm adding a gussed amount of losses to account for elbows and flow losses through the pipe. If the flow is to great you can choke it down with a ball valve. If it was me I would go with the 55.

Iwakis are excellent. I think a Mag950 might be one to consider, as well.

I will have to disagree. The mag 9 wil have almost no flow with the 10ft of lift plus the line losses. For this application he will need a pressure rated pump like an iwaki or blueline.

I have the perfect pump, Its called a bigfreakinone. at 10' of lift man you are going to need a monster of a pump to drive that thing. I have a pump thats rated for 700gph and max head of 10' and just pumping up 3 feet sucks the life from it. A magdrive 3600 might do the job but im doubting it. I would look past the whole wattage thing and start looking at the consumption in "horsepower." :) Maybe go to a Boating site and order one. Going to be some mad cash though. Best of luck to ya. Out of curiosity sake, wont you let us know what you decide on.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I will keep you posted on which pump I decide on and how it performs once I get the plumbing set up.
