I do not see why not. With a good skimmer and large frequent water changes. Photosynthitic corals and no fish. I think it would look a little bare at first. You would need to come up with an interesting way of mounting corals.

Grow corals, without [or minimal] fish?
You bet.

Provide the sort of tank I want?
Probably not, aesthetic-wise, but just because I have a conception of what my reef tank should look like [and it has little to do with a real reef/reefscape].

While for some it's all about the mechanics, some of us get caught up by the aesthetics of our coral-scape and thus add all these extraneous scenic rocks and fish. Can you believe some people actually put sand or gravel in the bottom as well? ;)

Actually, this is rather an interesting topic. I am planning a new system for seahorses, and because I want to raise the fry in the tank with the adults, I was going to go for a system with no live rock. Dead sand/gravel, tufa rock in the sump, seagrasses and coral skeletons in the tank for hitching posts. Skimmer and tufa in the sump would be the only filtration after the initial set up and a month or two with a UV.

Eventually, I was thinking of adding some gorgonians or softies, but I'm wondering if they'll bring in nasties like hydroids or crab eggs. Don't want the fry to snick stinging things or get eaten.

The reason for keeping the fry in with the adults is mainly the cost of buying and maintaining two systems with chillers, and also just to see if it works!

If your using natural seawater, are you not in effect using "live water".

Can it be done with artificial seawater that is totally sterile?

A try? Lots of people (including me) have been doing it a long time. Earliest documented was in about 1900.

I did post it in RC.

Sure, why not? Natural Seawater is sterilized before use.

How is it sterilized Chris? Are all organic compounds broken down?

Sand filtered then ozonated.
