It's fairly dense stuff and you'll have rock piled on it so I really don't think you need to glue it down.

If you did want to fasten it down, I suppose you could just use a bit of silicone. Any aquarium-safe silicone would do. I've used the GE Type-I Window & Door stuff (blue tube) before with no problems (don't use Type-II or anything with mildew inhibitors in it).

Someone here a while back used starboard and they glued it down to prevent an anoxic layer from being created under the board.

i thought i read in another threed that after a few months or more that the corners would start to curl a bit.

I think as long as it's thick enough you shouldn't have a problem. How thick is the stuff you bought?

FWIW, the guy who started the whole starboard thing doesn't have his glued down and his tank has been running for quite a while now (maybe almost a year now?). He hasn't reported any warping/curling problem.

You might want to check with him...

My board is 1/2" thick.
but like i was saying, if there is any chance of this happening(even if only a 1/4" curl) i want to prevent it now rather than have to break down my tank again to fix it later.

has anyone tried gluing the surface of the starboard and pushing crushed coral into it to give it a natural look? And then you can still clean the bottom without sucking up the crushed coral on the bottom since the it is glued to the starboard.

Any advice or and ideas on this ?

I remember reading somewhere that the only thing that seemed to work was using PVC cement to adhere the substrate to the Starboard worked. Basically they took the bottle of PVC cement and spread it over the Starboard and then squashed the substrate into it. They had to work with small sections at a time as the stuff dried pretty quick. IIRC they also tried silicone and it didn't stick long term.

I haven't seen or used starboard before, but perhaps you could rub one side with sand paper so that the silicone might hold better.

you know what, i have to make some cuts in my starboard to fit in the tank and around the overflows maybe with the cuts i'll try different glues with the coral and drop it in some water and see how it holds up.
meanwhile keep the ideas coming so i can try different things and post my findings here at a later date cause it doesn't look like to many have experimented with this yet.

You could always take a heat gun and melt the upper surface and squash the substrate into it...

i don't know if i could get it that soft to be able to push the coral into it, then i would be scared it would warp under the heat, but i will try it on one of the scrap pieces.

Agreed. Try it on scrap first. I have no idea what might happen if you heat it either... Hmmm, maybe you could put a thin layer of substrate on there and heat it with a clothing iron?

i got my starboard and made my cuts, on the scrap pieces i in tried some aquarium chalk on a 6" square piece let it dry and i was able to peel off the chalk in one piece with no effort at all, next i tried pvc glue heavy duty(clear) waited for that to dry and again peeled it off with a little more effort in one piece, next i notice how smooth the starboard was and decided to get a 60 grit sandpaper put it on my small orbital sander and sanded the whole piece, added the pvc glue again and it was very hard to pull up and if i did it would only tear off in very small pieces, so thats the route i took, it looks great, it's been sitting outside for a little over a week now to let the glue get hard and to leetch out all the impurities, also ran the water from the garden hose over it.
