I just wanted to let everyone know what happened to me today so that maybe you can avoid it in the future.

I flew into BWI (Baltimore) on Southwest Airlines last thursday for medical reasons. About 3 weeks ago before I bought my ticket and then again last monday, I called SW and asked them if there was any problems for me to bring back corals and fish on my return fly to West Palm Beach as cargo/luggage. The first time I spoke with some supervisor of god knows what that tells me so long as the containers are sealed and packaged appropriately, that should be no problem and that I could check them in as my luggage. I then was told the same last monday.

What I had in mind was to bing back all my corals that a friend has been more than generous to keep for me for about 5 months now since I moved. Given that it was OK by the airline, I spent 2.5 hours packing all my corals with my buddy this AM. Everything was good to go. I showed up at the airport and go up to the ticket counter where I was quickly told that they do not allow any containers on the plane with liquids and so the corals can't go. Same for the fish. I will spare you the mental picture of my anger to hear this bullshit at the last moment when my plane is now a little over an hour from leaving and I have my wife, my 2 year old, and an angry/hungry 7 week old next to me. To make the long story short, they "suggest" I look into the other airlines to see if would let me ship it as cargo or better yet send it via FedEx or UPS. First off, the cargo terminal for any airline is literally miles away from the terminal. At the very least you would ahve to drive over there. I walked to one of the counters of Delta to ask and was told that unless I am a "certified shipper" I am not allowed to ship anything via Delta or any airline. I asked what this certified shipper is and they tell me that since 911 unless you had either a shipping account with the airline before or have been certified by the government as a business that ships more than 6 times per month or some crap like that, nobody can ship anything via cargo with an airline. What a load of ****. So, I called FedEx and they tell me that for some ungodly amount of money they would ship it "same day". But, there is something to it. You have to have a FedEx account that was opened before 911 and you have to be home to have the package picked up. You can't even drop it off at the FedEx terminal, ahhh, it gets better, because FedEx actually ships it via airline cargo. Talk about monopoly feeding monopoly.............................

The only thing that saved the day was that my friend was around to quickly drive back to the airport to pick them back up. To say that I appreciate what he did would be a gross understatement.

To say that in principle alone I will never again fly via Southwest Airline is also an understatement. Not only that, but I will tell everyone I know too. I plan to send SW a letter, and although I realize it will not change anything it will make me feel better, detailing what happened and telling them how they will never see my business again.

The worst part of all to me is that it is amazing to me how far have we come driven by nothing but irrational fear. All these changes for "safety". I take my shoes off at the airport for "safety". What a load of crap. No wonder the rest of the world laughs at us daily.

So, if I call Kinkos to ask what time they close, I should ask them to fax me a confirmation too??

I called twice and got the same response. Why would I think that they would come up with this crap at the last minute??

Man, I'm sorry, this just sucks. I think that this airport security stuff is just a bunch of crappola we're being fed every time we travel.

BTW, last week I came with a hand lugage full of sargasum from Florida via AirTran.

All the best,
M.

I guess they didnt realize that "corals" are things that go in water....

I would write a letter also and thel them the only reason I took the trip was to pick up the corals but now I wasted my money and expect a refund. I would have gone crazy and with kids with you... oh man I hate traveling with one kid, let alone two.

When I read your topic I thought you were talking about aquarium airlines, man that sucks....good thing your friend was able to help you.

I've done carry on's, the trick is not to advertize that you have them

I've done carry on and boxes too as luggage. Never a problem. Hard not to advertise 3 large boxes with well over 120 corals in it

This is becoming off topic, but yeah - the US is becoming a little too crazy. 9/11 happens so what do they do? start coming down hard on their OWN people. Seems to me it was TALIBAN that hijacked the planes, not your "run-of-mill" US citizens!!! What the hell are they picking on the average Joe for???
Carry-on sounds like the way to go; but you better have a back up plan. You could get royally screwed.

PS - don't worry - they pull ridiculous crap up here in Canada, too.

Keep in mind that for most people, coral is the whitish looking rock the people put in the fish tank as decoration for the clownfishes.

I understand your frustration, but I can also understand the other side of the issue as well. I originally thought you were talking about a bag or two of fish and corals, but THREE LARGE BOXES and 120 CORALS is another story. I don't think you would have been able to bring those on the plane even before 9/11. IMO, you shouldn't have been surprised by the response from airport officials. I don't think you can blame SouthWest because I'm sure none of the airlines would have accepted that as carry-on baggage.

I flew Delta back from Cincinnati to Manchester, NH, with a stryo box filled with corals, marked as such as carry on (I could have checked it if I wanted to, they gave me the option). It is in Delta's official policy that "salt-water aquaria" are allowed to be brought on board.

Sorry to hear about that DGA but to my knowledge Southwest has always been like that about animals and other things - they do not have pressurized/heated luggage holds either to my recollection. I ran into the new fed regulations about shipping recently too when trying to get something same dya shipped for work - they needed a site survey and a 3 month paperwork process to allow me to ship on commercial airlines.

Greg:

I think you misunderstood or I explained it poorly. I was not bringing the boxes as carry on. They were to be checked in. When I say "large boxes", I am refering to the 14"x14"x14" boxes used standard in the pet industry for shipping of corals and such. Even one would have been too large to take in as a carry on. I did have a very small cooler that was more than appropriate for carry on and that had 3 fish in it. Also, when I say `20 corals, I was not refering to large or even medium size colonies. They were 99% frags, with 3-4 now getting to be the size of a smal fist.

My biggest surprised came because I had already done the proper questioning and investigation. I spoke with them twice. Once before I bought the ticket when I spoke to a supervisor of customer relations and the second time a few days before actually flying.

Part of what bothers me is that these regulations are money based at their bottom line or incredibly stupid at best. Southwest won't allow "liquids" because of concerns that they may spill and damage other cargo as they tell me and I can't ship as an individual so they point me to FedEx or UPS, both of which will acept same day or next deliveries and shipping and they use SWA as a subconctractor to do that. As a matter of fact, 65%+ of SWA's income comes from cargo shipping and a huge chunck of that comes from the USPS, FedEx, and UPS.
