Hello, I originally posted a question of compatibility on saltwaterfish.com's site. After further reading I am contesting weather the people that helped me were right so I am looking for a second opinion.

The tank is a 50 gallon, I have 15lbs live sand and I think about 25lbs crushed coral, 30lbs live rock, been cycling for 6months, UGF, Good Protean skimmer, Canister Filter,3 power heads (Currently all set at 10gph.

So on with what I was told I could put in it.

1 yellow tang
1 valentini puffer
1 fuzzy dwarf lion
2 Maroon clowns (Mated Pairs)

Now the reason I am asking this to a different crowed is I have read that that particular Puffer and Lion are incompatible?

Could some one tell me the compatibility of this group?

The original post if any one is interested can be located at

Thanks

50 gallons is to small for a yellow tang. Some may say that a juvenile would be okay, but ultimately it will overgrow the tank and need more swimming room to be happy.

These fish get to be 8" at max length. I wouldn't recommend a fish that loves to swim A LOT tha get to be 8" for any tank less then 90 gal, bare min. Most here would probably say 120 for a Yellow tang.

I'm far from being an expert, but I have never seen a yellow tank that is 8" in size and I have had them live for more than 9 years, in a 50+ gal (4') tank.

Nix the tang and I think it's doable. Canthigaster spp. can be notorious fin nippers, and he might go after the lion.

Well if you want a reef ditch all but the tang and even the tang is too small according to those with larger tanks...the clowns are the only ones ok with the tank if its gonna be reef and even those clowns are aggressive by nature, lessening the availibility of fish you can keep...

this was my argument for the fish compatibility database i talked about in here a looong time ago. basically a database that says what can live in what in different gallon tanks.

a simpler version of it would be for everyone to list the fish they have in their tank on a website and then allow the newbie to do a search of all the examples for the fish they want and see if anything similar comes up.

it would go a long way towards preventing loss of livestock to inexperienced aquarists.

...and it would also be an incredible undertaking, since most families of fish can't easily be lumped into neat groups. Example: Porcupine puffers and lions...probably not a good combo. Dogfaced puffers and lions...work just fine IME. Another: Triggers and inverts: Crosshatch and corals...just fine. Clown trigger and corals...bad combo. So how do you classify puffers and lions compatability, or triggers and corals?

Not to mention, a lot of combos simply haven't been tried. I was curious about how 2 male Cirrhilabrus spp. would get along together in a 125, and got a reply from one person that was very valuable...much more valuable than a database that would have told me "wrasse with wrasse--add with caution." It's much simpler to ask about the few species you plan on keeping and getting advice from people who have kept those exact fish together, IMO.

Just me 2 cents...

i got some people like you responding to this the same way last time i posted this idea. theres a certain group of people who don't like the idea thinking it takes the magic away or something. anything can be cataloged and tracked. the human genome was way wayyyy more complicated than this. i dont see a need to group them according to family. it could simply be figured out automatically based on people entering data of what they keep successfully and the number of times the database see's that successful combination. sure it would be complicated but why not try, theres nothing to lose and everything to gain. most of the time a newbie isnt going to know reef central or reefs.org even exist. they'll probably just wind up on garf or about.com.
