Just wanted to reintroduce myself. I have been around for a while now several years. I lost my 90 gal last year during a freak storm that took out our power for 11.5 days. So I started back FW and HATE IT. So I have been looking at a 125 gal at the LFS and am really thinking about doing it and selling the 90. Back when I was keeping the reef it seemed everyone was doing the DSB and now I am reading SSB is the way to go and I think I will do just that. I can't bring myself to do BB. I don't know if I will do a sump.....just paranoid of a flood i guess. I haven't decided on a skimmer yet either. I will get a Ca reactor later on when I start with the SPS. This is going to be a mixed tank...a little of everything within reason. So glad to be back

welcome back to the hobby!

i would recommend you to do a sump. in all reality they are no more likely to flood your home when constructed properly. some say they are safer in this respect when considering the likeli.hood of a hang on skimmer overflowing on a sumpless tank
the benefits that a sump provides are numerous as you probably already know.
as for the sand bed.. i haven't been on the boards for a few months and lord knows how villianized the sand bed may have become in my abscence, but i see no reason to fear the shallow bed as there are plenty of succeesful tanks that sport plenty of sand within them.

You won't be a paranoid for flood if you could predrill the new tank for a built-in overflow, or make sure your hang-on overflow has a siphon break.

I would also recommend the sump. Keep all the equipments out of sight.

Welcome back to the hobby!

Try an in tank refug. Not possible to flood that.

And welcome back.

danmhippo, why would you want a siphon break in the hang on overflow? if it is a proper overflow it will stop when the pump stops (and restart automatically). if you drill a siphon break, when the pump starts, the siphon doesn't, and you have a flood. I think you meant put a siphon break in the return line from the sump so it doesn't back siphon though the pump and flood the sump.

Thanx for the welcome back all....I found a guy locally that has overflows and I think will come by and make sure mine is set up right.....LOL I called today and got a loan on my 401K for $2000.00
Do you think that is enough to start the 125 gal?
The tank and stand are 678.00 and the rest is for rock and equipment....the check will be here in 7-10 days woohoo !!!! Oh I already have 2x250 MH from when I had the 90 gal reef so I just need new bulbs for them....can you believe I am still running the orig bulbs from 5 years ago on the FW

$2,000 is a fine start for a 125 gallon. :D

Aer you getting a reef ready 125g (with overflows already drilled)?

In any event, welcome back to this great hobby!!

No it's not RR. I will do a sump with overflows and maybe a closed loop. The back will be painted blue so nothing will show from that other than what's in the tank

Seems to me like a closed loop with a DIY filter would be a good way to go. Then you don't have to worry about floods from broken syphons or plugged overflows. add an in tank refugium could really save a lot of money and result in an easy to maintain system. IMO.

I would highly recommend a drilled tank with an internal overflow instead of an over the back type.

Closed loop for flow is a great idea as well.
