First off I know that he humuhumu is not even slightly reef safe. I have him in a FOWLR tank. My issue is that I need some kind of cleanup crew for the rocks and sand. I've tried various types of things. So far he's eaten trochus snails, turbo snails, bumble bee snails, hermits, and a brittle star. Anything that eats algae that this guy won't think is dinner ;) I feed him 3 times daily per my reading up on him. Thanks in advance.

How large is the tank and how large is the trigger? Also, what other fish are in with him?

BTW, I'm going to move this into the main discussion forum (I'll leave a copy in the NRF) so you get some feedback from the experienced folks...

The only fish I was able to keep with a huma was a lionfish and a snowflake eel. He killed everything else. Never tried cleaners as I knew he would eat those too.

Long time ago I had a 3" Picasso (huma-huma) that would chase a 10" Panther Grouper around.

They'll chew on plexi to.

Its an 80 gallon tank and the humu humu's only tankmate is a royal dottyback. They actually get along very good. There is about 100 lbs of live rock in the tank and the dottyback has manh hiding places. Thanks for your replies. I'm guessing that there is no cleanup crew the trigger won't eat. So anyone have any idea how to keep the rocks and sand somewhat clean?

By a large, R. aculeatus is one of the calmer triggers. I've never had a problem keeping them with other fish. You should be able to keep a yellow tang or foxface with him, no problem. Just make sure the fish you introduce is larger by a good margin. This may help keep your rocks in a bit better shape, but they won't touch bryopsis.

Then you need to do something to consume the nutrients that feed the algae. Like a refugium with plant life. that way you won't need a cleaner crew for the algae.

Thanks for all the replies. Since its a FOWLR, it just uses NO flourescent and the skimmer works quite nicely. The algae hasn't really grown much, I just like white sand instead of green ;) If it starts growing too much, I'll take the advice and get a foxface.

You will always have algae in a tank such as this Bob, refugeum or not. Triggers are messy eaters which just exacerbates the situation.
