when you removed the algae did the tissue which it was growing on disintergrate or look like its decaying? i had an expierence couple of weeks ago where i bought a leather. noticed it had brown algae on one side and two days later the whole coral feel apart. when wiping the algae off try to do it out of the aquarium ie place a bucket in the aquarium, fill it up with water and move the leather into it, remove bucket from aquarium, wipe away algae and then throw away the waste water in the bucket. that way if it is dangerous it wont spread. good luck :)
p.s chances are its fine, properbly just stress from traveling from the ocean to your place.

Leathers need an occasional blast to clear off the protective waxy film they make. This film does collect algae if it is not blown off.

Leathers can hold their film for quite a while. Blasting it off won't always work. I have heard of leathers staying shut for over a month then the film finally broke away. If the leather is in a better current it shouldnt last over a few days.

FWIW, I have kept and still have many leathers and find they wont produce this film if the current they are receiving is enough to keep the polyps moving well and the algae from building up on their tissue.
