I added a new brain to the tank yesterday, and like any coral I usually add at first, it was a bit shrunken up. When I woke up in the morning, it had fully inflated and spread out, and was gorgeous. It's now about 7:30 at night, and I am noticing that it has shrunk up again. Do brains typically shrink up regularly like this everyday? Do all LPS shrink up regularly (showing some of what looks like a rigid skeleton)?

At the bottom of the brain (now that its shrunken up again) is showing some of what I would think everyone calls the skeleton. Some white under the colorfull area that has a lined lllll texture.

Anyway, any info would be great. Thanks.

Sounds totally normal for a healthy Trachyphyllia (open brain).

The skeleton is the base, and should be firmly planted in the sand.

Firmly plant the base in the sand? it just seems flat.. nothing really to wedge into the sand. I just plopped it on top of the sand. Should I have wedged it in somehow?

They are found in the sand in the wild, but brains have been kept on rock for years and years in reef tanks. Put it where it looks happiest to you!
