HEre is a simple question. Im setting up a new 55 gallon system and Im wanting a species tank of one and only one super cool fish in this 55, If you could have one, just one, what would it be. I was wanting a hawaiian dragon eel and will probably wind up with one unless someone has a way cooler idea.

what about chromis. i heard that theyre a really nice looking fish when you have enough so that they school. if anyone knows how many chromis would fit into a 55 gallon without overcrowding?

I've heard that some people have had chromis that won't school and end up attacing each other instead.

Any comments?

BTW, my vote would be for Bar Gobies-school easy and look really cool.

My experience with Chromis (the first 6 fish in my 90g) was that they picked a territory and defended it from the other chromis.

They only started schooling when I added other fish, but as many folk have said, even a school of chromis gets dull after a while (unless you have like 30 of them in a 500g).

I think a dragon eel would keep my attention for a lot longer.

Good luck finding sea dragons! Even if you do you should leave them to an expert. Killing one would be horrible, in addition you would probably have to pay 1k plus to get one.

I tried to put about 5 or 6 chromis in a 55, and one of them tormented the others one by one until only he was left. I don't know if I got a rogue chromis or not, but he was quite aggressive with the others.

i've heard chromis do better in odd groups... which would explain the deaths i had.. had three, and before i knew the tid bit, i thought i'd be nice and get a fourth so they could pair up, but the new one survied, but one of the old one's was killed off...

Picasso Tang....Very Cool and should do very well in its own tank.

Blue Damsel's school very well as well as Blue/Green chromis.... get as many as you like, I would say the bio factor to 55 gal with a decent skimmer and a nice school would be about 15-20.
We started out with 6 greens....over the last 18 monthes we are down to 1........the last known where abouts of #5 was in the tentacles of our 15" wide Green serpent starfish one EARLY morning last week......#6 is steppin' rather livley these days
