If you use a different type of resin please tell me what type. Buckeye would definatly have a benefit from being a sponsor, but I am not posting this to pick him in anyway. Just wanted to get an idea of what most people do. I did the HI-S changes for a long time but when my LFS got close to 40 a pop, I looked for alternatives.
Does anyone think the HI-S cartridges last longer then other types? Or take out more silicates then a regualr resin would?
Personally, I use SpectraPure colorchange DI resins in my unit. Right now I'm running a 4 stage SpectraPure RO/DI and one neat tweak that I performed was incorporating a 5 micron carbon/sediment filter before my RO/DI unit. Technically I now have a 5 stage unit. heh. The main benefit I've seen from this setup is that the 5 micron carbon/sediment filter is $7 for two of them and it has GREATLY extended the life of all my other cartridges and resins as I have seen a significant reduction in the number of times I have to change out cartridges and DI resins. Granted I only go through 40 gallons per month, but I've gotten an additional year out of my system this way.
FWIW, I voted "other" (last week). I get the non-color-change DI cartridges from the manufacturer of my RO/DI unit (ARS) because they last a bit longer than the color-change ones.
The product water after my RO is always low single digit TDS readings though, so I get a LONG time out of a cartridge. If I was going through them often I would probably do the Buckeye refill thing...
I buy my resin by the cubic foot. It comes out to around $170 including shipping and makes about 35 - 10" cartridges. That is just under $5 per cartridge. You can also get some refillable cartridges if you don't already have some.
I just started using the refillable cartridge from Buckeye. I like it just fine so far.
I have used the color changing and non-color changing ones in the past. I prefer non-color changing. The refillable ones from Buckeye are cheap. That's why I use them.
