I have been keeping reefs long enough to remember when Elegance corals were one of the most hardy corals. Then a few years ago they became much less so. Are any of ya'll having any luck with it now? Andy

This was recently asked...the answer is generally still no. Elegance corals occur in nature in lagoonal areas, higher nutrient and lower current. If the conditions given to them are right they will thrive if not, they wither away over time.

E Boernman

is currently collecting dying elegance corals in orderto find out what is going on. It is not so much how they are kept as even expertly kept ones die at an alarming rate nowdays.Although god knows badly kept ones die sooner.

Asusual in this hobby there are all kinds of explanations going around all based on either past history or on sample sizes of !

Hmmm... Lagoons are shallow aren't they? So far we have: brightly lit, low flow, alot of nutrients in the water column. Sounds like perfect conditions for a major algae bloom. Just my opinion though, I could be wrong.

Do some research...
Environmental Conditions:

Unlike corals in general and Small Polyp Stonies in particular, Elegance (and other Caryophyllid) Corals require water of less than typical reef system quality. Yes, you read that right, this species is found lying level in/under muddy, shallows of grassy reef flats, with all that go with the setting; low-medium/diffuse light and high organic nutrient concentrations. Allow me to be more specific... you’re soon to understand why these animals often suffer in aquarium settings.

The problem today is not with the care they recieve
but with what is going on before they are bought.
in the past they have thrived in dirty tanks and in tanks with no nutrients. Now regardless of tank conditions they die. It may be relatedto the collection practice in Indonesia where it is alleged that entire areas are stripped of elegans. It may be due to collection in deep waters .It may be due to shipping practices. At present the best advice seems to be do not purchase and discourage vendors from carrying them until a solutioin is found.
