I run carbon to polish the water, and every time I've noticed some of my caulerpa turn white. I understand this is a sign that it's about to go sexual, so I pluck it back as I find it that way, but I throw a bag of carbon in the overflow just to catch any nasties that I may have missed. I don't run carbon for more than a week at a time. After that, I take the bag out and chuck the contents.

How long are you -supposed- to run carbon? I've seen ranges from a few days to 24/7. I've also read that the carbon gets saturated after as a few days of use, and then it's useless. Any truth to this?

I've experimented with this for a little bit. In my experience the top brands of GAC become ineffective for removing the yellow/green tint after about 48 hours. It may be inappropriate for me to state that it's ineffective for removing other chemical compounds after 48 hours but I personally believe that is the case.

After 48 hours is does seem to act as a biologic filter though for converting Ammonia and Nitrite.

My advice it to use it as needed for 48 hours with tank water forced through it (active) and then discard.

Passive use of GAC, in a bag in the sump, seem to be relatively ineffective.

You could layer the carbon in the reactor. Put in a layer of carbon then a sponge then the phosban/rowaphos. Of course still use the top bottom sponge. This will prevent the phosban frombeing clogged with detritus and give the water a small polish before it goes through the expensive media.

Bob, a few insidental reports of someones CA going up after adding calcium carbonate to a flow through area on their tanks doesn't discount years of scientific proof. If this did happen everyone who has a sandbed in their tanks would be seeing a high CA level.

If you allow your PH and ALK to degenerate to low levels it has been proven that Oyster Shells will begin to dissolve. Of course to get such a low ALK & PH your corals will suffer and probably die just like Beaslbob's has so there's really no purpose to it. Besides, Oyster shells are loaded with conchin, pyrroles and porphyrins. Beaslbob always fails to mention this when he suggests that new hobbiests put crushed Oyster shells in their tank and the harm to corals caused by the excessive phosphates of these proteins.

But then, he really doesn't really care about what happens to their corals, he just likes the attention.

Given what I have read and what I understand about running carbon, you are safe running it for about five days, then you need to toss it out.

I run mine about a week.

Then I sprinkle it on my potatoes. Mmmmm.

Do you guys use deltec skimmers over there?

The in sump skimmers have compartments for carbon or rowaphos and they get the entire system pumped through on a regular basis.

They work extremely well.

The deltec stuff is nice if your a very rich person it may be worth it. At the prices I see them at over here I doubt many regular reefers can afford them. I know with my 27.5k a year salary, house payments, car payments, insurance, daycare....alls I could afford was a bullet 3 8)

Nope, I'm not rich either. That's why I'm still saving for my Deltec. Also, by saving only $50 a week, my wife will never know! (Best part)

Are they that superior to EuroReef, AquaC or Bullets?

I find that hard to believe.

Those things are awesome! I saw my first one a couple of weeks ago, and as a ER owner, I was blown away at the skimmate this thing was collecting. Granted this skimmer was bigger than what I use, but I was still impressed. It would be interesting to put a big Deltec and a big EuroReef side by side and see which one pulls out gunk after the other has stopped.

Check out Steve Weast's website: Oregonreef.com He has the next to largest Deltec, the AP1004 with the optional washdown feature, a cool $4844.00.
