I have a 75gal. tank i'm setting up. I built a plenum with an appropriate sand depth. My question is that the sump I'm using is a 25gal trickle filter with a bio media compartment. I thinking maybe I should remove the media because it might be counter productive. Any thoughts if it matters or not. Thanks Eddie

i haven't ever run a plenum but if i is set up properly i see no reason to use the media especially if you have some Live Rock in htere.

If this will be a reef tank I would definently get rid of the bio media.

as would I, replace it with some liverock. If the tank isnt set up yet, you can buy some bulk uncured LR and cure it in the tank.

Wow, a trickle filter makes a rather expensive sump, but yeah, you don't want bio-balls on a reef tank for sure. I'm looking for a trickle filter for a planted discus tank, they are more pricey than I expected! You could sell the filter, and build a sump!

You know, personaly Bio Balls are not as bad as made out to be. I have the same Bio balls for 14 years now,I still have my first fish I put in the tank.Never had my tank crash, never had desease. As for Hair algae very rarely do I see that in my tank.I do not have a refugeum or a deep sand bed. Any way it has worked for me. Just thought I let you know.

Regarding bioballs - I like them for the simple fact that they are not submerged and there is a tremendous amount of splashing water flow over them - thereby creating maximum aeration of the water. I keep LR in both the display and fuge. They may not add other significant value - but I cannot believe they actually have any detrimental effect.
