T12 ballast on T8 bulbs?

I was thinking of getting this ballast to add another bulb to a tank. The tank is a 20 high therefore the standard fixture uses 18" bulbs. Seeing as 18 inchers are T8, can I use this ballast on it? Will the endcaps fit?

I would use a T12 bulb but I dont think I'll have room.

The end caps will not fit the t8 lamp, too loose. t8 are 1" dia and t12 are 1-1/2" dia.The spacing on the pin are the same however. The ballast may fire the lamp but you will shorten the lamp life. I personal would you a power compact.
