I just started a 6g nano and am wondering about filtration. I've gutted the stock sponge, bio balls, ceramic rings, and carbon and have filled the compartments with LR rubble. Is anyone running only LR on a system, or should I add some carbon or mechanical filtration too?

My nano is just using live sand and live rock for all filtration.

There is a nano forum where you'll find the specialists ;)

There is also a Nano tank build-off where you can get ideas.

I think he's trying to troll acting like a newbie ;)

I think you'll be fine with just live rock and sand :D

Well all he has to add is Macro..... :D aww never mind ;). Live rock and sand should be dandy. What are you planning on keeping in the Nano?

Thanks Guy... I'm pretty familiar with the nano forum , but my question's not really necessarily nano-specific.

No sand either... trying to go barebottom. I'm guessing I'll have to do a bit more frequent water changes without sand, or mechanical or chemical filtration.

Lawdawg- Haven't really decided on inhabitants, but since I'm running the stock 18W PC, I'm starting with the most colorful zoas and corallimorph's I can get. I'd also like to add a couple (relatively) fast growing LPS, maybe a/some acans or echinos. *Dons flame suit and braces self*.

So, where's the thread with the pictures, hmmmmmmmm????

pics are forthcoming. it's actually my entry for the nr.c buildoff, but i tend to get better advice here. emphasis on "tend".

I got some really nice LR and some frags from Chad at reefscience. I went to his facility yesterday, and it's incredible. He has everything and the SPS are really nice, even though I'm not real knowledgable in that area. The website is only the very tip of the iceberg.

My aquascape came out pretty nice, I think. I got one piece that has a HUGE clam shell that's really unique. Params are pretty shaky right now (Amm=0.25ppm, NO3=5 ppm, NO2=0.2ppm, ph=8.0) but it looks like the semi-cured LR has really jumpstarted the nitrogen cycle.

I used semi cured in my nano, and wowsers it does make a classic curve in the water parameters.

I would keep it as is for those inhabitants. They're not going to need or appreciate ultra pristine water. I would just top off with Kalk and do a regular WC schedule.

Any idea for a fish yet?

You're right. These corals will probably do better in somewhat more nutrient rich water.

Not sure yet on the fish. Maybe a pair of hellfish firefish, if I want to go crazy. I want something that's appropriate for the size of the tank, is not too timid, and very colorful.

I'll email you a top secret pic of my secret weapon, Wandell... I think it's going to make a very big difference over the short period of this contest. We'll see...

Sorry :) I, in no way, meant to be insulting. With a bare bottom, I believe the best filtration is live rock and lots of waterflow.

no offense taken, Guy...

My overriding hope with the tank is to be able to show that I can grow out nice colonies from relatively small frags over the life of the tank, so that's why I'm focusing on zoas and corallimorphs since they can be relatively easily fragged, but I also need a couple vertical corals to fill in the water column. Not going to do xenia, since the stuff spreads like wildfire, but perhaps a yellow sarco? Any suggestions for something with some color/character?

Did you add the corals to the tank while its still cycling or are they being kept in another tank?
LR will be perfect for filtration in this tank, the more the better I believe. Why dont you want a sandy tank bottom? I think it looks a lot better personally.
I reckon a sinularia would be good to fill out the tank, they grow nice and tall but they wont shade as much of the tank as a sarco.

The corals are definitely in another tank until the cycle's over. :)

I'm going barebottom because this tank is for the NR.c buildoff and I'm attempting to try something a little bit unique. Thanks for the suggestions on the softies, but I'm looking for a bit of color too and sinularia is pretty uniformly tan or brown...

Ken, apex is an experienced reefer and knows what he's doing. He's entered in a nano build off on another forum and I believe he's just looking for sugguestions or alternatives for nano cube filtration. The contest he's entered in is only for 6 months, where the build off here is for a year. He's got to move fast IF he wants to woow the judges.

Good luck Apex!!!! And did you enter the stock or open catagory?

I've seen some really nice Sinularias around. I have one that is a flourescent green. Comes up really nice especially with actinic supplement. They don't seem to be as common though. Good luck anyway, a lot of great corals are to be had by being in the right place at the right time as I'm sure you know.
