I just realized that with an AC300 and an ACMini w/IceProbe on my tank, I can have two fuges, one lit and the other dark. Does anyone else have something like this? How well would the Mini fuge work with the IceProbe bringing down the temp? I'll have the heater in the lit fuge, too; will that hurt the animals?

Your idea sounds interesting, although I'm not totally convinced the advantage of having dual fuges. Many animals go by light cycles for reproductive behavior, so a single fuge with a regular light schedule might be better.

The Iceprobe (I had a pair) works fine anywhere there is relatively high flow. You can stick it anywhere and it won't hurt the animals.

i've been running a dark fuge/sump on my nano for about a year. my display tank has had a dark fuge in one format or another (partial or entire, single or multiple) for over 7-years.

since i'm constantly doing changes or rearrangements every few months, in addition to my unorthodox reefing methods  i can't really comment on 'benefits' since the systems' always settling or stabilizing. so my results aren't untainted by other influences.

but there are areas of reefs that are perpetually dark (inside the rockwork) so i don't think the concept is an alien one to employ. whether a dark fuge is so essential or beneficial is debatable but the richness in sponges, tunicates, and microorganisms would lead me to think that there is a significant biotope developing/existing.

further supposition that such biodiversity is inherently 'good' would lead me to say dark fuges (or regular fuges for that matter) are beneficial to our systems. jmo

Is there a way to measure the benefits of having a dark fuge? I guess I would need two identical tanks, one with and one without.

that's an interesting experiment. <echoes-of-DSB>

two setups, both with refugiums, one lit and one dark. same livestock makeup and inputs. i wonder which would turn out better?

it's overly simplistic layouts but with some fine-tuning with appropriate fuge occupants it could make such an 'experiment' very interesting.

The dark fuge will have just live rocks, maybe sand. No macro. It's for the critters who don't want to live in a 24/7 lit fuge.
