I've got two questions as I empty my current 29-gallon reef tank (5-years old) and put the contents into a new 75-gallon tank....

1st: The 29-gallon tank has crushed coral (~3-5 mm) as a substrate but I want to put a DSB into the 75-gallon. What should I do with the crushed coral? I feel bad simply discarding it as it has a fair abundance of amphipods, copepods, worms, and little seastars/brittlestars.

2nd: My local Home Depot does not carry "SouthDown" sand but has something labelled as "limestone screenings" that looks like sand to me. It seems to have a large range in grain size but basically looks like "sand". Does anyone have any experience with this stuff as a substrate?

Thanks for any help!
Cheers

You could use the crushed coral in some type of trickle filter. And that way salvage the pods and stuff.

No familiar with limestone screenings.

I just use play sand but do use a calcium carbonate source (oyster shells) in my trickle filter in the sump.

edited "pods" above. LOL

Welcome to RDO, DocB!

Does the limestone "screening" totally disappears if you add mild acid (vinegar, for example) to it?

beaslbob & Reef Box Etc - thanks for the replies.

Not sure about the mild acid but will check. If it does disappear, then what?
