DI cartridge

I am repalcing my DI cartridge but I am not sure which end has to be up. One end came with a washer. I was going to put that end down in it's canister?. I am having poor quality water so I got rid of all the cartridges & membranes & I did not think that it made a difference of which end is up... I have a color indicating mixed bed DI cartridge..
