As Sanjay so gracefully put it, sunlight is not blue (neither is moonlight for that matter).

"If you want your tank looking like Papa Smurf pee'd in it, then by all means..." - Sanjay in #reefs talk.

Welp, I don't much care for yellow tanks, and I want my corals colors to pop out as much as possible. Slow growth on SPS is fine, since it's a small tank.

So now you're hounding me about this in here as well as #reefs???

;) :P :D

Peace,

Chip

Well, the wavelengths that corals use for photosynthesis really tells the story. Sure, the sun isn't blue, but after a couple of meters, most of the wavelengths that corals don't use much of, are filtered out.

Smurfette can piss in my tank, anytime

Although I prefer the blue tint myself for aesthetics and it does seem to make the colors pop, I agree with Wade that corals use more than just blue light (and I can post absorption curves to prove it - don't get me started Karl!...  ). I also think it takes more than a few meters to filter out much of the visible spectrum of sunlight.
