My issue was the footprint of the skimmer. In your case, what happens when your skimmer decides to blow a gasket somewhere in your joints? I wanted to make sure it was contained in my sump. I had a bad experience with one leaking, and I ended up replacing my tank stand as a result. 8O Not fun.

Now you are comparing and in tank skimmer to an external skimmer. I understand your concern, I had a skimmer before that had flat gaskets and a half dozen screws to take off everytime I cleaned out the collection cup. I had trouble getting it to seal and not drip water.
This skimmer has o-ring connections and uses spin couplings that are designed for 300 psig and only see .25 psig at most. I have never had a leak on the o-ring connection.
I understand your concern. The bottom of my stand is a pan with a lip. It can hold 2 gallons of water before overflowing onto the floor. The pan has a audibile alarm that sounds off if I get any water in the pan.
