I guess this could be included in the hitchhiker thread, but I didn't notice it for quite awhile. Anyway this blue sponge is growing on a rock from Bali. It had grown and attached itself to the piece of montipora cup in the second photo. I pulled it lose and noticed it had killed the montipora where it attached. Anyone know the species or anything about it?

No, I don't know what it is, but I used to have a tank that had an abundance of sponges identical in appearance to that.

i had a black sponge in my tank i had that same problem with. it made alot of finger like projections but would start to bleach the green monti cap i had it next to. i tried to remove it with some tweezers when suddenly i felt multiple stinging pains in my hand-- i can only compare the pain now to about 5-6 fire ant bites after having been bitten but at the time i didnt have anything to compare it to except OMG OUCH. IT STUNG ME! i yanked my hand out of the tank and though i had to remove its growth every few months to keep it away from my SPS i would wear rubber gloves from that point on whenever i worked with it. still there are so many species of sponges we know absolutely nothing about so if you were going to die from some weird disease unknown to science i think youd get it from some strange sponge growing on a piece of liverock first.

isn't it dangerous to put tweezers in your tank?

Just don't leave them in there and it will be fine.

I've used stainles steel tweezer in salt water applications forever without a problem.
