My sump will not quite hold the volume that drains back during a power failure - the drilled hole for creating a siphon from the refugium works and the main overflow eventually stops but I know it will overflow the sump by some margin. Is there a suggestion for some safety net or plumbing to make sure the extra water doesn't drip onto the floor of the tank stand? I do have a floor drain nearby that I could use - but can't visualize how to create the protection system...

Thanks.

You can install a drain at the top of your sump: drill a bulkhead into the sump about 1" under the top and get a pipe to the drain: thus, when the sump is about to overflow (due to power outage) the extra water will go to the drain.

Or what bradl said: keep lower water in the sump if possible. I assume you already have the biggest sump you can have...

You can do this, but as the power comes back on, your water level will drop possibly killing your pumps. ...I do like the bulkhead idea for over flow, especially if you've got a floor drain near by. It wouldn't make sense NOT to do it, because then everything around the tank would get wet too.

Thanks for the replies. No real room for another container under there. Drilling near the top of the sump makes sense- install a bulkhead and say 1" drain? What do you recommend to drill the plastic/plexglas with? I'm thinking a spade bit might not be a good choice.
