Finally moved my 75G reef today to make room for my new 300g. :D

At least I only had to move it 10 feet, but you still have to go through the whole process of breaking everything down so that it can be handled.

All of my rocks are grown together now, so moving them out of the tank was out of the question.

I was only able to catch one of my fish, the manderin, so the tang and the clown had to ride it out.

I siphoned water down to about 4-5 inches. I splashed the exposed corals and rocks frequently.

I used two 2X6 stuck though the doors of the stand so that each guy had a handle to grab. I had 3 helpers plus myself.

I took the clams and corals that were on the sandbed out and put them in buckets so that they wouldn't be harmed in case of an avalanche.

Everything worked out well and the tank is back up and running.

The whole process took about 4 hours.

Now it is time for a beer. :D

I totally agree that moving tanks is a total PIA. I just moved a couple reef tanks (one 20 gallon, one 12 gallon) from Minneapolis to Cleveland (about 900 miles). You'd think with these small tanks it wouldn't be so bad... but you'd be wrong. Fortunately with the help of some portable air pumps, everything (soft corals, LPS, shrimps, several fish) survived except for a few xenia stalks that turned to mush. Looking back on it, however, it was totally worth it! The tanks look great in my new place!

Moving a tank is a BIG pain. I move my 110 once to redo the floors then agin 25 miles when I moved. I will have to move my 60 from New Orleans to Houston in the not so distance furture.

I am considering moving my 46gal from basement to upstairs living room (my wife complains about never seeing it in our nice finished basement)

Would you go through the trouble? Can I move it with 4-5inches of water left in it without it breaking (I will have to go up the basement stairs)

Advice welcome

Thanks

If you will get more enjoyment out of the tank upstairs, then sure!

Ideally tanks should be as empty as possible when moving, but I have had good luck moving tanks with a few inches of water or sand by sliding them onto a piece of plywood and carrying that. It helps keep the tank from twisting and keep even pressure around the edge.

Just don't let it slide off! 8O

8O Moving it up stairs? I'd maybe leave a little sand in it but no water. Too hard to keep it level going up the steps to protect the seams.

Ever heard of a 2 wheel hand truck?

Remove the live stock, rock and most of the water, leave the tank on the stand, slide the hand truck under the stand and wheel it where ever you want, even upstairs. I used to move my tanks all the time by myself, didn't have to share any beer. :D
