PC's with accros

Well, hello all,


So my 65 is coming along nicely. The only issue is phosphorus, gettiing a little red slime algae not sure why. Could this be from my RODI cartriges needing to be changed out, we do have extremley hard water here? Anyhow to my main point, less I ramble on for hours, who is keeping accros under PC, anyone? I currently have 4/96 watt PC ( 2 actinics, 2 10,000) and I am skeptical about there use for high intesity animals, and before I put any more animals in the tank, I was hoping to elicit some opinions. And who does not like to give there opinion. :wink: I believe they would survive, but will they have good color, and will the animals thrive? Just wondering, trying to avoid simply mistakes I have made in the past.

They'll certainly survive, but very few of the brightly colored ones will hold their color. The two that certainly might are the orange montipora digitata and the acropora yongei, aka, green slimer. Very hardy species that you'd almost have to try and kill.

You can also try some of the Horn Corals from the hydnophora genus.

They will survive.
If you want to be safe you can possition them higher in the tank.
I have a few acros, monti's as well as other sps that grows well under 4x96 watts pc (2x7100 & 2x6700).

I recently added an acropora frag, about 1.25" long. It's on the very top of LR about 4" or 5" from the water's surface. I'm running 2x65PC (Atc 03 & 10k) + 2x20w NO (Atc 03 + Atc blue) on a 29gal.

I assume if you see the polyps extending, it's in good shape? It's brown/greenish, with a blue-ish hue at the tips.

Here's an Acro about 3" away from a 96W 50/50 bulb. Keep em up very high and I think it's doable. As reefnutz mentioned A. yongei will hold its color pretty well.

That pic doesn't show the color very well. Here's a better one; it's on the right. On the left is Pocillopora damicornis, which started sending out asexual buds in this tank. Thus I think the light was plenty sufficient

First, you guys ROCK, and thank you for your responses and pictures, they are very much appreciated. This makes happy, I really wanted to keep accros, but I didn't want to risk killing any animals.

Hi, i got not to long ago a brown acropora frag about two inches long, i have it about for inches from my lights, i had pc's, i just changed my lighting to three 110 vho and one 54watt t-5 and one 24watt t-5, right over the frag, well it's there not dead but no growth to see, i think in order for these type of corals to grow and i mean grow with many branches you need MH lighting just my opinion, mine should have had at least one new branch, like i said it's not dead but not thriving like it should.
