A few weeks ago my 6 yr. old asked for a small tank in his room. I was so excited... nano reef... maybe mantis tank... think of what I can do!
"No" he said, "I want fresh water "
OK, I thought. Maybe this won't be so bad, I've been wanting to try a fresh water plant tank.

"No mom, I want a beta like my friends in a little jar!"

The things we do for our kids! The beta is now in his room in a 2.5G tank (I just couldn't put it in a little jar) with plastic plants and he's talking about adding a cool purple shark statue he saw at the pet shop.

Thats still cool. One of my first tanks as a kid had an airstone powered shipwreck that would break apart and let the bubbles out. I thought it was the coolest thing... oh and I had a bubble-wand across the back. 20 years later it has become an addiction that I spend more on than I allow myself to think about :)
We all need to start somewhere.

I remember getting my first 20 gallon freshwater tank when I was 12.. My dad took me in to the pet shop, we picked everything out we needed, and when I ran over to the ceramic ornaments to pick out a skull he laughed at me and then yelled at me to get away from that ugly crap.

Best thing that ever happened to me.

wyw, had the same thing happen with my daughter, almost to the letter. I offered to set up a 10 gallon nano reef in her room, she didn't want it. So I suggested a fish only tank with a pair of ocellaris and a few plastic corals. She didn't want it. She wanted a betta.

We agreed this would be okay, then for her birthday one of her friends brought her a male and a female betta sharing a half gallon vase. The next day, I went out and bought her a 2.5 gallon minibow. The bettas have both passed on, but now the tank houses a cutting of my lutea from my planted tank, and she has two guppies in it, and she wants a fake crocea clam for it.

She loves the guppies... guppies! *screams and falls over*

I loved my livebearer tank! I had to get a frog to keep the babies in check!

and you can get some really nice fancy guppies!

There was a pretty white and blue one I tried to talk her into... but she wanted red and yellow. Then she promptly named them after her favorite anime characters, Yuki and Kyo from Fruits Basket. *sigh*

I might have to get my own guppies after my black skirts die, very cute fish, but I make up for the cuteness by owning the meanest yellow tang in the world, or at least.. he thinks he's the meanest yellow tang in the world. *chuckle*

I was kind of excited about trying a planted live bearer tank. I tried to convince my 9 yr old he wanted one last year but he opted for a leopard gecko instead.

When my youngest actually wanted a fish, I got so excited. But NOOOOOO, it had to be the solitary beta. Now I admit it's a beautiful fish but the tank could have been so much more!!! and I could have used some of the old lights and equiptment I had sitting around the house.

Bettas can be kept with certain community fish... I can check into that for you, but there are a few small fish that bettas won't kill that won't attack their fins.

I think one of the favorites to put with bettas is cherry barbs, but don't quote me on it until I've looked it up again.
