As to your question, I got mine rebuilt from Home Depot for cheap. Its a 3500W generator that has enough life to run for at least overnight on a single tank of fuel and can power the essentials in the tank (used it twice so far, both times being ice storms!)
My dad just picked up one for $700 from home depot. IIRC it is a 5000w. That should be enough to power a fridge, freezer and a light in every room. On one tank it can run 8-12 hours depending on the load.
