Adding Phosphate remover?

Hello,

I have a 55 gallon tank with a star polyp and a open brain coral. I'm still in the process of setting up the tank. Even though I have a RODI unit filtering my water I am going to start adding phosphate remover.

I have been told that since I'm just starting to add the phosphate remover that I should keep a bag of it in the sump for 24 hours. Remove it, add new phosphate remover in the same bag for another 24 hours. Remove it, then add the third bag and leave that in for a month or so.

Is this the proper way to do it? I've tested my water for phosphates and it tested 0 but I have little faith in the test kit. Thanks for any help.

I suggest that you dont use that product at all. You would be much better off with phos ban, or rowa phos, both ferric oxide hydroxide phosphate removers, unlike the white aluminum based product's, they dont leach anything back into the tank. They can be used continuosly, and kept in untill the level's begin to rise, and changed. Once you develop a pattern, you change it before the level's rise.

if it's white, it's aluminum and it can't be left in the water for much more then 3 days. Check the labeled instructions.

ROWAphos can be left in the water with no ill side effects. It will not leach back into the water after it has been used up.

Kinda seems like a commercial post, but whatever. I tryed to flip through and see is ROWAUSA.com was a sponser and it doesnt appear that way.

I have tried ROWAphos, Phosban, and Phoslock and perfer the later more dry products so you are not buying water weight. Also the GFO binds the phosphate so it isnt truely removed untill after you replace the media. I use Phosban in a kent marine fluidized reactor.

What type of test kit are you using anyhow?

I use seagel by Seachem and leave it in a filter for 3 months at a time (per manuf. instructions I believe) and I have seen no ill effects and my phosphate is undetectable with Salifert and Seachem kits.
