My LFS received a shipment of some very nice looking live rock from Sumatra. I picked up a few pieces that were covered in pink coraline algae. All of my tank's coraline is dark purple or a dark red/burgundy. I thought the pink would be a nice addition. The problem is that after a few days in my tank, almost all of the pink is gone. I'm wondering if the pink should return after it has been in the tank for a while?

It depends. Is the pink really purple that's dying off or was it truly a pink coralline. It's impossible to tell the difference without waiting for it to either grow or finish dying off.

Thanks Guy,

I suspected that maybe the pink was dying purple coraline. The LFS told me that the Sumatra coraline had much more pink than other regions. I was hopeful, but suspicious.

I also noticed a small ammonia increase, but it only lasted a few days. This would also be indicative of die off.

Some of the pink still remains, so I still have a small glimmer of hope.
