I would think that an Iwaki is more powerful than a needle wheel. Aren't Iwakis pressure rated? I think the NW would clog more often IMO. A prefilter like a filter sock would work. You just need a way to add it.

Filter sock might be an option, but they are a maintenance issue for me. I don't want something that needs to be cleaned every few days.

Call me lazy, but with a 300G tank, I have enough work to do already, lol.

I agree. However, it sounds like you have a good skimmer. You would be tossing away some good $ for nothing if the NW clogs too. Then you'll need the sock anyhoo.

Len says that the needlewheel would mince any crusacean.

The beckett just gets clogged because the pills are to large to fit through them. The beckett relies on water pressure alone. The needlewheel spins, so that the critters get minced.

I've never personally seen a needlewheel in action, so I am relying on others for this information.

You are correct that a eductor wouldn't clog. There are no small space in an eductor.

I have some penductors in my system now. I'll take one of them out and see if I can figure out how to adapt it to my skimmer.

FWY, I stated this in my Harlequin Tusk thread: I took the penductors off of my returns last night. The flow in the tank diminished substantially (as expected). I ran the system overnight without them and the skimmer did not clog for the first time in a week.

Now I will drill out the orifice of the penductors until I find a happy balance between good flow, but not so much that critters get blown around so badly that they wound up going over the overflow.

My problem may be solved.

It's nice to have a tank with too much flow for a change :D. Dialing it back it a whole lot easier than increasing it.!

I'm not sure how you could use those eductors for an injector, but Galleon makes his out of regular PVC fittings. Looks pretty simple.

I went and found Chris's old thread on The Reef Tank where he describes building one in detail. The pictures are no longer there, so it's practically impossible to follow.

I went to HD tonight and bought all the fittings that I will need to put the penductor on my skimmer. Where my beckett was previously housed in a 1.5" tee, with an air valve coming off the tee side. I am going to put a penductor inside a 2" tee (fits nicely along with a few reducers, etc.) I don't know how this rig will work, but I think it might. I going to come off the 2" tee with an air valve just like before.

Galleon's skimmer was totally different from what I am going to do here. But then again, I am just doing a quick mod to see how it works, as opposed to building one from scratch.
