We were talking to some house guests late last night in the dining room. When our conversation was rudely interrupted by loud popping sounds coming from the tank in the living room . Now I've heard the popping before by had so far convinced my self it was equipment hitting the side of the tank or a snail shell hitting something. This time there was no denying it. It was loud and went on every few minuets for a long time. Now I know the most likely culprit but before I tear my tank apart ...

I remember someone comparing the popping sounds from a mantis vs. the popping of a pistol shrimp.

All the popping was in 2's and 3's

I'm holding out hope it's a pistol shrimp because I haven't noticed any unexplained losses and with how loud the noise was I'd think the animal would be going for my fish by now.

I've had them side by side and I can't tell the difference in sound nor frequency. The biggest difference was the pile of shells in from of the Mantis den.

I hope with you that it's a Pistol Shrimp.

You'd KNOW if it was a Mantis by the losses of livestock and as Guy said the pile of shells in front of it's hidey hole.

Good Luck!
