Whats the stupidest or funniest thing your LFS has told you to make a $1

Mines pretty funny I went to my LFS to buy my fishies some more food. I walked over to the tanks and admired the beautiful lion fish they had. One of the guys that worked their walked over and asked me if I liked him, I said yes but I cant have him hes to mean. And this idoit goes no they our some of the nicest fish you could ever own and goes to PET it. I stopped him and walked out laughing.

I was told by a pet shop that all drilled tanks, even pre-drilled from the factory, will crack within 6 months to a year and I would be foolish to get one. Guess how many drilled tanks they had in stock?

I love it...LFS bashing.

My lionfish experiences have been just that...no problems whatsoever. Not a hint of aggression. But hey, I work at an LFS, so what do I know

When I very first started and got my 135g tank off craigslist for $200, I went to a LFS and being naive at the time thought I needed sand sifters as a cleanup crews, the guy told me about the black brittle stars, no problem.. then I asked how many I needed he said for a tank my size probably 5 or 6. Well luckily I didn't buy that many :)

When I casually mentioned that my clownfish missed a regular spawning right when I got my rotifer culture going, the guy tried to sell me this enormous (and seriously expensive) conch shell, saying they would certainly start to spawn again if I gave them that.

I told him I would rather wait a bit.

This isn't my story it happend to a guy I know

He went to his LFS and they had some live rock w/ really pretty purple coraline algae. His best friend works there so he asked him about the live rock saying he wanted to buy it and his friend wispered the store owner PAINTED the purple on.

I don't work at a LFS but my lions have never show aggression, the tangs I used to own were much more aggressive than any of my lions.

I went into my LFS a few days ago loking at a Trigger they had in and this customer comes in, I started talking to this guy who has a 7 gallon Nano, he was in there to replace his fish, I asked what happened to his other fish and this was his story....

He had a Purple Tang that killed his 2 clowns & Royal Gramma so he flushed the tang.

I explained the Purple Tangs needs to him, than explain how this was his fault not the Tangs fault. Than he understood why this Tang did this in a 7g nano.

While staring into the hair algae infested marine tanks at my LFS, one of the owners walks past. I asked him if he was using tap water. He said they always have. Another time we were talking tanks and macroalgae, and he said how much he likes the hair algae waving around in the current in his 90 gallon tank at home. To each his own I suppose.

Did you know that 90% of all aquarium owners don't have a clue as to how big their tank is? And about the same percentage of them couldn't even name two of the fish in their tank, (not even by family or common name)?

Nothing more humorous than watching the reef elite giggle about knowing more than a $6/hr employee.

Maybe we should have a dumb customer question thread? :P

Oooh, I bet that would be good!

You are right though, often times when I have tried to chat with someone at the LFS about what kind of fish they have the conversation goes like this: "Well, I had a small blue one and a dotted white one, but he killed the blue one, so now I have. . ."

I quote "I bought RO/DI water from the lfs and it caused slime algea to grow...from now on I'm going to use tap water. "8O

When I was a kid I worked at the LFS. It seemed like when it came to fish peoples common sense just falls out the window. A customer insisted that her goldfish was drinking the water in the tank cos the fish was gasping at the surface and the water level was decreasing. Ummmm.. evaporation and low DO............I told the lady her fish had a drinking problem and she should send him to AA.

customers may be dumb on average but tech support shouldn't be.

rudimentary training or the mysterious taboo "i don't know/i'm not sure let me find out for you." are often missing in LFS for some odd reason.

i say odd because you don't see this (usually) in other industries. e.g. hardware stores, car dealers, general retailers, etc. there's usually some training for employees. the typical LFS most of us see doesn't seem to bother to invest into this. Rover et al. excluded.

otoh, most of the LFS are mom & pop and such training support is still time & money.

otooh, that doesn't explain why the box stores don't do it either though. :?

I agree! Most hobbyist don't go into the store pretending they have all the answers. The frustration with LFS isn't when they don't know something but when they pretend that they do. I would love to see my LFS with a well worn copy of a fish ID book along with one for corals. That way the $6. employee doesn't have to know everything and the customer gets better information. Jeff's Exotic Fish always has a well used fish book on their work table. I often look up my DH or children's latest "I want" to show them why it's inappropriate..

My most recent run in with LFS is their insistence that the Prism skimmers is the best

haha I went into the local LFS that i despise because they are the only ones that sell decent water jubs. so as he's ringing them up i see one of their display aquariums featuring a skilter and it's not even foaming. the aquarium looked fine i guess but i tested the waters. "hey what's the skimmer lookey thing? is it any good?"

"oh yeah they work wonders, check 'em out we got them right over there!"

"Will that yellow tang thing live in a fish bowl." Yikes!
